Eagles Fall 5-0 To Radford On "Senior Day"

Winthrop Now 3-15 In Conference, Three-Game Series At Coastal Carolina Remaining

ROCK HILL, SC--Winthrop honored seniors Megan Chapman, Taylor Wright, Carole Reda and Kelly Blea prior to the game, but Radford spoiled the day by defeating the Eagles 5-0 Sunday afternoon at Terry Field.
 
The Eagles drop to 15-33 on the year and are 3-15 in the league with one three-game series remaining. The Highlanders improved to 12-3 in conference play and 28-14 on the season.
 
Sara Allen started on the mound for Winthrop and held the Highlanders offense to just one run in the top of the first inning. With one out in the inning, Hannah Ojeda reached on a drop third strike wild pitch and stole second base. Vicky Madden was then walked and stole second base when Ojeda advanced to third on a passed ball. Micalah Sacre hit a hard line drive just out of the reach of Alex White at third base to score Ojeda to put the Highlanders in the lead 1-0.

Thee Eagles threatened in the bottom of the first inning when Chapman led off with a single down the left field line. Chapman ended up out at second on the next play when McKenzi Corn's sacrifice bunt attempt bounced high off the ground and fielded easily in time by Radford to throw to second for the force out. Kristy Noble followed with a grounder that led to Corn being out at second on a force out. With two outs and Noble on first, Reda singled to right field to advance Noble into scoring position. The threat ended as Blea grounded out to short.

Radford added two more runs on four hits in the top of the third. Sacre singled up the middle to get things started. Ryndee Ruch followed with a single through the left side to put runners on first and second for Michelle Bealle. She did her job and singled up the middle to score Sacre. Natalie Becker came in to pitch for Allen and gave up a single to pinch hitter Frankie Martinez that scored Ruch.  
 
Winthrop missed a scoring opportunity in the fifth inning after a leadoff walk was issued to Alex White. She advanced to second on a ground ball to the pitcher from Jenna Harbin. Teja Durante flied out to left field for the second out of the inning to bring up Chapman. She was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second for Corn. Corn hit a hard ground ball to second base, stranding White in scoring position.
 
The Highlanders added two more runs on three hits and one error in the top of the sixth inning. Michelle Beall led off the inning and reached on an error by White at third base. Jessie Hutchens then laid down a bunt that went between Becker and Taylor Wright at first base that was fielded by Chapman. Chapman threw out Beall trying to advance to third on the play, Hutchens advanced to second base on the throw to third. Jackie Warr then singled to left advance Hutchens to third base and then stole second to put runners on second and third for Morgan Eye. Eye tripled down the right field line to score Hutchens and Warr to make the score 5-0.

Jackie Jenkins improved to 13-6 on the year as she tossed a four-hit shutout with two walks. She has now tossed three shutouts against Winthrop in her brief career.

Allen suffered the loss allowing two earned runs on seven hits in four innings of work with a walk and three strikeouts. Becker tossed three innings of relief allowing two runs on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

Jenna Harbin singled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Eagles a base runner but Chelsey Schoenfeldt grounded out to second base in a pinch-hitting role to end the game.

Sacre finished with three hits on the day and Eye had two hits and two RBI.

The Eagles will be back in action again on May 1st against Charlotte at 5 p.m. at Terry Field.
