Eagle Softball Falls 3-2 To Gardner-Webb

Corn, Schoenfeldt Had Two Hits Each

Amanda Gomes three-run double in the sixth inning lifted Gardner-Webb to a 3-2 victory over Winthrop, Sunday afternoon in Big South Conference softball action at Terry Field.

Winthrop led 2-0 as Gomes stepped to the plate with two outs and she drilled a line drive to right center that went all the way to the fence on an 0-1 count. McKenzie Morenus, Savannah Burns and Samantha Meenaghan all came around to score.

With the loss, the Eagles fall to 15-30 on the year and 4-12 in league play while Gardner-Webb takes the series 2-1 is now 20-23 on the year and 6-7 in conference.

Things got started with one out for the Runnin' Bulldogs as Meenaghan singled to right center. After Chelsey Schoenfeldt struck out Jordyn Arrowood, she issued her first walk of the game to put runners at first and second. Morenus drew a walk to load the bases before Gomes came through with the big hit.

There were only a couple of base runners through the first three innings and it was Winthrop that broke through on the scoreboard first. McKenzi Corn led off the fourth inning with a line drive that deflected off the pitcher. Corn moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kristy Noble and Schoenfeldt tried to help her own cause as she ripped double to left center, scoring Corn. Schoenfeldt moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single through the left side by Alex White.

Schoenfeldt and Corn each finished with two hits on the day as Corn has hit safely in eight straight.

Gomes had one of four hits for the Runnin' Bulldogs as she now has nine RBI in 13 league games.

Schoenfeldt suffered the loss and is 5-16 on the year as she tossed six innings allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Natalie Becker pitched a 1-2-3 seventh.

Jessica Childers started the game for Gardner-Webb, but was pulled in the fourth when the Eagles took the lead. She finished the game allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts in 3.1 innings. Cindy Boomhower picked up the victory in relief for the second straight game as she's 8-5 on the year after allowing just three hits with two strikeouts in 3.2 innings.

Winthrop will be back in action at home next weekend as it takes on Radford in a three-game series starting Saturday, April 21 in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Gardner-Webb will be back in action on Wednesday, April 18 at 2 p.m. with a double-header against Presbyterian College at home.
