ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop softball steps away from Big South Conference action Wednesday afternoon when it hosts Western Carolina in a doubleheader at 4 p.m. as it looks to end a six-game losing streak.
Winthrop enters the contest with a 13-27 overall record and has won just two of its last 19 games. Western Carolina enters the doubleheader with a 13-25 overall record and has lost four in a row and is 0-12 on the road this season.
Junior
Chelsey Schoenfeldt continues to be consistent at the plate as she's leading the team with a .372 average and is closing in on her career-high for RBI in a season as she's got 25 through 40 games. She's also leading the team with seven doubles and tied for the team lead with five home runs.
Senior
Megan Chapman seems to have regained her form at the plate since returning from injury as she's riding a four-game hit streak and is second on the team this season with an average of .321. She's 10-for-15 on the bases and is closing in on 100 career runs (93).
After a slow start to the season, freshman
Kristy Noble has been one of the team's most consistent batters over the last 19 games with a .306 average with seven runs, three homers and seven RBI with a .382 on-base percentage.
In the circle the Eagles will feature
Natalie Becker, who is 2-7 with a 4.26 ERA over the last 19 appearances. Schoenfeldt is also likely to start one of the games as she's struggled over the 19-game span with a 0-9 record and a 5.85 ERA.
Since starting 11-10, Winthrop has hit a skid in which the team has average only 2.2 runs per game while allowing opponents to average 5.4.
The Catamounts are led by Erin Foster's .347 batting average. She's scored 25 runs and has 11 home runs on the year with 35 RBI. Shemekia Scotton is second on the team with a .314 average, is third on the team with 20 runs and has an on-base percentage of .464.
The Eagles could see Jordan Garrett, Katie King, or Amber Steinhardt in the circle on Wednesday. Garrett leads the team with a 4.14 ERA with a 5-13 record and 102 strikeouts in 123.1 innings. King is 4-6 on the year with a 4.40 ERA and just 15 walks in 55.2 innings. Steinhardt has a 5.07 ERA with a 4-5 record and has tossed 66.1 innings on the year.
Western Carolina is averaging 3.9 runs per game on the year and like the Eagles, has been in a lot of close games with 19 of them decided by two runs or less. Western Carolina is 8-6 in one-run games and 1-4 in games decided by two runs (9-10). Winthrop on the year is 6-9 in one-run games and 5-4 in games decided by two runs.
Wednesday's games will be just the fifth and sixth meetings in the all-time series as Winthrop holds a 4-0 record.
