Eagles Extend Winning Streak To Five Games On The First Day Of The Winthrop/Adidas Invitational

Andrea, Schoenfeldt Each Had Four Hits, Home Run

ROCK HILL,SC-The Eagles' offense came alive and extended their winning streak to five games in their 9-8 and 6-5 victories over St. John's and Bowling Green in the first day of the 2012 Winthrop/ Adidas Invitational.
 
With the two wins, the Winthrop improved to 10-9. St. John's dropped to 3-15 and Bowling Green fell to 7-6 on the year.
 
After the games, Head Coach Mark Cooke said, “These were two great offense efforts for our team. The pitchers gave up a few uncharacteristic home runs but our bats made up for that. Both of our opponents today were excellent ball clubs and I was really happy with how we performed.”
 
The Eagles first home game of the season was a battle but the Eagles got the clutch hits and home runs they needed to win. St. John's scored first off of an RBI double by Kristi Cady in the first inning. They scored again in the second off a solo home run by Mackenna Neuroth.
 
The Eagles battled back in the second inning and scored two runs to tie the score. Mel Andrea started the offense by reaching on an infield single to the shortstop. She scored on two wild pitches and a pass ball. Taylor Wright kept the inning going by reaching second base on an error by the left fielder. She scored the second run of the inning for the Eagles on a single to right by Kristy Noble.
 
Chelsey Schoenfeldt started on the mound for the Eagles and was replaced by Sutton Watson after giving up two runs on four hits. Watson gave up back-to-back home runs and was replaced by Natalie Becker. Becker got out of the inning after only giving up one hit but with the two home runs, the score was 4-2, Red Storm going into the bottom of the third.
 
Schoenfeldt led off the third inning for the Eagles and singled up the middle. Andrea hit a clutch home run, her second of the season, to tie the score 4-4 going into the fourth inning. The Eagles struck again in the fifth inning with back-to-back home runs by Schoenfeldt and Kathryn Eberlin.
 
St. John's scored again off of a solo home run by Julia Sanchez to make the score 6-5 but Becker held on and shut them down by striking all three batters in the 7th inning.
 
In the game, the Eagles had six runs, ten hits and two errors. Becker pitched five innings and recorded nine strikeouts and only gave up four hits. Andrea and Schoenfeldt each had two hits and one RBI. Eberlin had the game winning RBI off a solo home run.
 
Coach Cooke said, “St. John's is a battled tested team that has beaten some excellent teams. Bowling Green is a traditionally excellent team so for us to beat both of them in two knock-down drag-out fights was huge for us.”
 
The Eagles were the visiting team in their second contest of the day versus Bowling Green and scored first off of a sacrifice fly ball from Andrea to score Chapman. Coach Cooke said, “Chapman was heads up on the line drive to come back and tag up to make sure she scored. This play set the tone for the rest of the game. We got the hits we needed and made the plays we needed to win.”
 
The Falcons answered back in the bottom of the first with a run of their own and scored their lead-off batter Hannah Fulk off of a single by Andrea Arney.
 
The Eagles offense came alive in the top of the third inning. They scored four runs on three hits to make the score 5-1. Schoenfeldt started the rally with a one out walk. Andrea followed her with an infield single. With two outs, Taylor Wright hit her first home run of the season. Wright's home run was followed by a double to right center by Kristy Noble. She scored on two consecutive wild pitches.
 
The Falcons came back in the bottom of the third and scored three runs off of two hits of their own. Fulk started the inning for the Falcons with a one out single up the middle. She advanced to second on a ground ball to shortstop and a pass ball. Paige Berger walked and she and Fulk scored on a home run to left center by Arney.
 
The Eagles offense added two more runs in the fourth inning making the score 7-4 Eagles in the lead. Andrea came through again with a big two RBI double to right center. They scored one more run in the sixth and had the opportunity to score more runs but Jenna Harbin grounded into a double play with the bases loaded to end the threat for the Eagles. The final run for the Eagles was scored off a single by Schoenfeldt to left center to make the score 9-4 going into the bottom of the seventh inning.
 
Schoenfeldt started on the mound for the Eagles and left the game in the third inning after giving up four runs and three hits. Becker came into the game and gave up no runs until the seventh inning. Becker struck out the first batter in the inning but walk the second batter. She advanced to second base on a wild pitch and scored on a home run by Fulk. Fulk's home run was followed by a double to left center by Proehl. She advanced to third on a sacrifice fly by Berger. Proehl scored on a home run by Arney, her second of the day making the score, 9-8 Eagles. Becker settled down and ended the game with a strike out, her seventh of the game.
 
The offensive effort for the Eagles on the day included four homeruns, twenty four hits and fifteen runs between both games. Andrea and Schoenfeldt each had one home run and four hits. Andrea had four RBIs and Schoenfeldt had three RBIs on the day. Wright had three RBIs, two hits and one home run, her first home run and RBIs of the year.

The Eagles will look to extend their winning streak in the second game of the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational vs. Albany at 11 a.m. and vs. UNC Wilmington at 3 p.m.
