ROCK HILL, SC—
The Winthrop softball team will look to end its 11-game losing streak Friday afternoon as it heads to Liberty for a three-game Big South Conference series.

The Eagles will face the Flames on Friday in a double-header beginning at 4 p.m. with the series wrapping up on Saturday with a single game at 1 p.m.

Winthrop enters the game with an 11-21 record after suffering a 12-2 loss on Wednesday against South Carolina. It was the first time since April 2 of last season that the Eagles had allowed 10 or more runs in a game when the team lost to Liberty 13-4 at home. Winthrop is 0-4 in league play and has now lost seven straight in regular season league games.

Liberty is 9-17 on the year with a 3-3 mark in the Big South after getting swept in a double-header at Radford on Wednesday.

The Eagles have not won since March 10 against UNC Wilmington in the last game of the Winthrop/adidas Invitational as Natalie Becker tossed a shutout in a 2-0 win.

Since its last win, Winthrop has faced five ranked teams, another SEC opponent and four conference schools.

Junior Chelsey Schoenfeldt leads the team with a .356 average with nine runs and a team-best 21 RBI as she's also got a .443 on-base percentage. Senior shortstop Megan Chapman has not returned to the line-up since suffering an injury in the bottom of the first against Campbell on Thursday, March 22. It's possible she may return some time in the series against the Flames this weekend.

During the 11-game losing streak, the team has only batted .219 with junior Teja Durante swinging the hottest bat as she's hitting .345 during the skid. The next best is freshman Kristy Noble at .321 as she's riding an eight-game hitting streak. Schoenfeldt has batted .300 through the streak and has five RBI in that span. As a team, the Eagles have just a .298 on-base percentage during the losing streak.

In addition to the offense struggling, the pitching staff has a 4.18 ERA minus the 12 runs against South Carolina as Schoenfeldt is 0-6 and Becker is 0-3 in that time frame.

Despite a 9-17 record, Liberty is averaging four runs per game and is led by freshman Kelby Allen with a .364 average while sophomore Katie Zavodny is averaging .348 with 12 runs and a team-high eight stolen bases. Senior Meredith Crisante and red-shirt sophomore Jill Stephens are also hitting in the .300's at .308.

Winthrop is likely to see both of Liberty's main pitchers this weekend in sophomore Alyssa DiMartino and freshman Chandler Ball. DiMartino is 6-11 with 13 starts on the season with 35 strikeouts and 35 walks in 105 innings of work while Ball is 3-5 on the year with 47 strikeouts and 37 walks in 61 innings.

Winthrop leads the all-time series 29-28 as Liberty won the previous matchup in a 3-0 win at the Big South Conference tournament in 2011.
