Box Score

WOODSTOCK, GA-
The Eagles pitching staff and defense held Furman to just three hits in their 1-0 win in their second game of the Buzz Classic. The win ended a five-game skid by Winthrop.

With the win, the Eagles snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 6-9. The Paladins drop to 6-8 on the year. Winthrop was scheduled to play Alabama State on Saturday, but rain forced the team's to move locations and adjust the schedule. Winthrop will play Alabama State Sunday morning at 10 a.m. and UNC Greensboro at 2 p.m. to complete their tournament competition on the weekend.

“Our defense and pitching were flawless and had no mistakes,” said Winthrop head coach Mark Cooke. “We needed a win and we were successful. Natalie (Becker) and Chelsey (Schoenfeldt) were lights out. They really pitched well. We also played heads up, flawless defense behind them.”

Both teams left nine runners on base but the Eagles got the timely hit they needed to score the game's only run in the bottom of the first inning. Megan Chapman led off with a single to center field and stole second base. McKenzi Corn and Kathryn Eberlin both drew walks to load the bases for Schoenfeldt, who drove in Chapman with a deep sacrifice fly ball.

One of the best opportunities for the Paladins to score came in the top of the first inning but Becker was able to get out of a jam. Shortstop Taylor Jenkins started the offense with a double with one out. Laykn Shull drew a walk, putting runners on first and second base. Becker struck out the next batter and then walked Lauren Collier to load the bases. She got out of the jam by striking out Hannah Pace to end the inning, stranding three runners.

The Paladins threatened again in the top of the fourth inning but Becker and Schoenfeldt combined to maintain the shut out. Becker started the inning with a walk to Pace. Pace advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Emily Boyer. Becker struck out the next batter, Stephanie Spain, but she reached base on a wild pitch. Ambree Muelller came in to run for Pace and advanced to third base on the wild pitch. Becker was replaced Schoenfeldt after she walked the next batter, loading the bases. Schoenfeldt came in and forced a ground ball and a line drive to end the threat.

Becker and Schoenfeldt combined for the shutout and only allowed three hits in the game. Becker had five strikeouts and five walks in the game and Schoenfeldt had three strikeouts and issued no walks to earn the win.

The Eagles had five hits in the game. Chapman had two hits and Corn, Melanie Andrea and Kristy Noble each had one hit. Schoenfeldt supplied the only RBI in the game, her 12th of the season. Corn has now hit safely in four straight games.
