Box Score

ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop opened up Big South Conference play with a 5-4 home loss to Campbell Thursday night at Terry Field as its losing streak extends to seven games while the season record falls to 11-17.

The Camels improve to 16-15 on the season.

Head Coach Mark Cooke said of the loss, “This was a tough loss for us. The difference was that they drove in the runs and we didn't. The walks in the first inning also hurt us. The loss of Megan Chapman after the first inning made an impact too but Kelsey Ritter did a good job for us today.”

The Camels jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning on two hits. Eagle pitcher Natalie Becker gave up a one-out single and two walks to load the bases. She got the next batter to strikeout but then gave up a two RBI double to right center off the bat of Kailey Farmer. After another walk, Becker was replaced by Chelsey Schoenfeldt. Schoenfeldt got the Eagles out of the jam by getting Brittany Arnn to strike out swinging.

The Eagles lead-off hitter Megan Chapman suffered an injury running to first base in the bottom of the first inning and had to leave the game. She was replaced by freshman Kelsey Ritter.

After falling behind, the Eagles battled back in the third inning and scored four runs on the three hits to take the lead, 4-3 after three innings. Kristy Noble started the rally for the Eagles with a lead-off single to left field. Teja Durante followed with a bunt for a hit putting runners on first and second base. Kathryn Eberlin got hit by a pitch with two outs to load the bases for the Eagles RBI leader, Schoenfeldt. She drew  a walk to score Noble. Andrea followed Schoenfeldt with a walk to score Durante before Alex White came through with a two-run double.

The Camels responded immediately as right fielder Sarah Forgacs led off the top of the fourth inning with a big solo home run over the right field fence making the score 4-4. The home run was followed by a two out single up the middle by Raven Lee. Stephanie Jones then followed with a double to center field but the Eagles got out of the inning without any runs being scored by getting Lee out at home on a great relay from Durante to Noble at second base to Kelly Blea at home plate.

Campbell added the winning run in the top of the sixth inning off two hits. Forgacs started the rally by drawing a one out walk and then stealing second base. She scored on a single up the middle by Taylor Magee. The Eagles got out of the inning with another fantastic relay from Durante to Blea at the plate.

The Eagles didn't go down without a fight in the bottom of the seventh inning. Durante got a one out single to right field and advanced to second base on a walk by Ritter. With the tying run on second base, Corn and Eberlin both struckout to end the threat and the game for the Eagles.

Schoenfeldt suffered the loss and falls to 5-8 on the year as she tossed 6.1 innings of relief allowing three runs on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Campbell's Oliva Scarborough earned the win to improve to 2-0 on the year as she tossed 4.1 innings of relief allowing no runs on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Jones finished the game with three hits while Ericka Nesbitt had two hits.

White finished with two hits and two RBI for the Eagles as Schoenfeldt's hitting streak came to an end at five games as she was 0-for-2 with an RBI. Durante also had two hits on the day.

The Eagles next game will be a double-header against Charleston Southern at Terry Field on Saturday, March 22 at 2 p.m.
