Softball Hosts Campbell Thursday Evening In Big South Opener

Winthrop Will Face Tough Campbell Offense

After traveling thousands of miles over spring break to participate in the Chevron Spring Fling in Honlulu, HI, the Winthrop softball team returned home and is set to face Campbell University Thursday evening in the conference opener for both teams.

This will be the first time the two teams meet in a conference setting since the 1994 season on March 23 when the two teams split a double-header. Winthrop leads the all-time series 25-6 and was 19-4 against the Camels during their first stint in the Big South. The two teams last met in 2005 on Feb. 19, 2005 at the Elon Invitational with the Eagles winning 4-0.

The Eagles enter Big South action with an overall record of 11-16 and is looking to end a six-game losing streak. Campbell has won four of its last five and enters with a 15-15 record.

Winthrop faced Top 25 teams in five of its six games in Hawaii and has now faced eight ranked opponents this year and holds a 1-7 record in those games.

Prior to its trip to Hawaii, Winthrop won six of seven games and hasn't been shutout in the last 13 games.

Junior Chelsey Schoenfeldt is leading the team offensively with a .367 average, nine runs, five doubles, three homers and 19 RBI. She's got an on-base percentage of .440 and is currently riding a five-game hit streak.

Senior Megan Chapman had a dip in her average over the last week but is still hitting an impressive .349 with 13 runs, an on-base percentage of .438 and a team-high 10 stolen bases. Defensively Chapman has just one error in the last 19 games after committing five in the first eight games.

In the circle for the Eagles will be Schoenfeldt or sophomore Natalie Becker. Schoenfeldt is 5-7 on the season with a 4.81 ERA with 28 strikeouts and 12 walks in 59.2 innings. Becker is 5-8 on the year with a 3.62 ERA and 92 strikeouts to 63 walks in 89 innings.

The Camels are scoring 4.4 runs per game and led by a couple of freshmen in Ericka Nesbitt, Stephanie Jones and Julia Callicutt.

Nesbitt is the team's leading hitter at .385 and is tied for the team lead in runs with 17. She's also 10-for-11 on the bases while posting a .434 on-base percentage. Nesbitt has 10 hits in her last four games.

Jones is batting .315 with 17 runs as well and is second on the team with 23 RBI. She's got eight doubles and three homers.

Callicutt has the best ERA on the Camels squad at 2.29 as she's 5-3 on the year in nine starts and 12 appearances. She's struck out 35 with 36 walks in 55 innings. Junior Brittany Arnn has the most starts for Campbell with 12 and has posted a 3.00 ERA with 47 strikeouts and 35 walks in 74.2 innings.

Senior Taylor McGee and sophomore Raven Lee have also provided some power offense. McGee has six home runs and a team-high 24 RBI on the year while Lee also has six home runs with 16 RBI.
