LOUISVILLE, KY—The storybook run for the Winthrop men's soccer team came to an end against a hot Louisville team with a 5-0 loss in the second round of the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship, Sunday evening at Cardinal Park.
The Eagles gave up a goal just 54 seconds into the match and never recovered as they end their season at 12-9-2. The 12 wins are tied for the fourth most in a single-season in Winthrop history.
In the 26
th minute, Winthrop settled down a little bit and worked its way into drawing a free kick straight on from goal about 25 yards out.
Alex Isern stepped up and blasted a shot low by the wall and it skipped in front of keeper Mike Mauro as he got a hand on the ball and it shot up high and bounced off the crossbar and wide of the net.
Leading 2-0, Louisville's Dylan Mares scored the next three goals for the Cardinals to complete a hat trick and another goal was added in the 81
st minute to complete the scoring.
Josh Mort nearly ruined the shutout late in the game as he received a pass, took a couple of dribbles forward and let one fly from about 30 yards that knuckled the entire way towards the frame. The ball dipped and bounced in front of Mauro but he was able to keep the ball from skipping by for one of his two saves.
“We played a number of nationally ranked teams this year like North Carolina, Old Dominion, VCU, SMU and Coastal Carolina to name a few and without question Louisville is the best team we played,” said Winthrop head coach
Rich Posipanko. “All the credit to them (Louisville) as they are a very good team and I'd be shocked if they're not going deep into this tournament and I think have a legitimate chance to make it to the final.”
The Eagles earned the fifth trip to the NCAA Tournament by knocking off the top three seeds in the Big South Tournament. That was followed by being the first team in school history and just the second program in conference history to advance to the Round of 32 after knocking off Southern Methodist in penalties.
“The guys are down,” said Posipanko. “I'm going to tell them. You'll think about this one for a couple of days but when you sit down and take a look at things you're going to be happy with the season we had. We're a young team and I think the future bodes well for us.”
