Final Results
KIAWAH ISLAND, SC--The Winthrop men's golf team closed out the fall season with an impressive second place finish in the 2012 Wendy"s Kiawah Classic which was completed on Tuesday at the Turtle Point Golf Course.
The Eagles shot a 6-over par 290 in the final round of the 54-hole event to finish behind tournament champion South Carolina who took a seven-stroke lead over Winthrop after Sunday's first round. The Gamecocks went on to win the tourney by 20 shots on the par 71, 7001-yard course. Winthrop found itself in second place after the first round by shooting 289. The Eagles slipped to fourth on Monday with a round of 300, but came back on Tuesday with the 290 to finish at 879 and six shots ahead of third place finisher Jacksonville State.
Senior
Kamito Hirai again led the Eagles as he shot 218(75-71-72) and finished in tie for 9th place which earned him a spot on the All-Tournament Team. USC's Caleb Sturgeon claimed medalist honors by firing a 3-under par 210 (68-74-68).
The results for Winthrop four other golfers are as follows:
Taylor Dickson (73-74-72, 219, tied for 12th);
Cameron Bell (73-78-72, 223, tied for 25th);
Kyle Bearden (71-83-74, 228, tied for 43rd);
Walt Todd (72-77-81, 230, tied for 51st).
Winthrop will open the 2013 spring season in the Seabest Invitational, Feb. 3-5, in Ponte Vedra, FL.
