ROCK HILL, SC—
Sean Comer's goal in the 79th minute lifted Winthrop to a 1-0 victory over Virginia Military Institute, Saturday afternoon in Big South Conference men's soccer action at Eagle Field.

It looked as if the Eagles were headed toward their third straight overtime match as they were pressing offensively and couldn't finish their opportunities until Comer changed that. The sophomore forward was subbed in at the 75:34 mark of the match and was on the right end of a Tomas Brennan cross for the only goal of the game. Brennan's service came to the near post as Comer ran on to it near the top of the six-yard box and he redirected the ball into the right corner of the goal.

With the win, Winthrop improves to 8-7-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the Big South while VMI falls to 2-12-1 overall and 1-7-1 in league play.

VMI's best second half opportunities came off long range shots as Blake McCauley hit one from about 25 yards straight on from goal but his low shot to the left corner was saved by a diving Enrique Miranda and held on for no rebound. Then minutes after the Eagles took the lead Matt Seinfeld ripped a shot from around 25 yards out just off to the left of goal and the shot about chest high knuckled its way through the box and just missed the frame.

The two teams played to a draw at the half as each team created opportunities going forward but couldn't convert in the final third.

Winthrop had a couple of good chances late in the second half as Alex Isern and CJ Miller each had open shots from 10 yards straight on from goal, but VMI keeper Daniel Kitchen made good saves to keep the slate clean heading to halftime. Isern had the first attempt after being set up free behind the Keydets defense and attempted to bend the ball far post but Kitchen made the save. Just seconds later Miller was set up running on to the ball from 10 yards, but
Kitchen tipped his shot just wide for a corner kick.

VMI had two dangerous free kick opportunities just outside the 18-yard box. The first came in the 18th minute as Seinfeld's free kick toward the right side of the goal was deflected out of bounds by an Eagle defender. Then in the 20th minute VMI had a free kick right at the top of the box and it was Seinfeld again but his shot was low and left.

Winthrop finished with a 19-10 advantage in shots and a 6-5 edge in corner kicks. Kitchen finished with 10 saves for VMI while Miranda had three saves to earn his second shutout of the season and 10th in his career.

The Eagles will be in action on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. against Longwood as they will celebrate “Senior Night”. VMI will be back on the pitch Monday evening at 7 p.m. as it travels to Raleigh, NC to take on North Carolina State.
