ROCK HILL, SC—
Achille Obougou's goal in the 102nd minute gave Winthrop a 2-1 victory in double-overtime over Gardner-Webb, Wednesday evening in Big South Conference men's soccer action.

Winthrop trailed 1-0 at the half, but rallied for the victory to even its record to 7-7-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the league while Gardner-Webb falls to 3-12-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the conference.

Alex Isern collected a ball that made its way across the mouth of the goal, then turned toward the end line and crossed the ball on the ground as Obougou collected the pass, took and touch to his right and then fired a shot from around the six-yard box into the top right corner of the frame for the game-winner. It was his sixth goal of the season and third-game winning goal.

The Runnin' Bulldogs had a couple of free headers straight on from goal in the first overtime, but were unable to put them on frame. The first came in the 92nd minute off the head of Chris Davis from around eight yards out and the second off the foot of Chijioke Akujuobi as his shot from just inside the 18-yard box looked as if it had a chance to find the corner of the goal but was turned away and out of bounds for a corner by a Winthrop defender.

Trailing at the half, Winthrop managed to tie the match in the second half with a goal by Alex Isern in the 57th minute. The ball was cleared out to the top of the box on a corner kick and Adam Brundle cracked a one-touch shot from about 22 yards out and the shot was knocked down by a hand of a Gardner-Webb defender and a penalty shot was awarded. Isern stepped up and ripped the shot into the back of the net.

Winthrop had a few good chances in the first half but it was Gardner-Webb that led at the break thanks to a goal in the 10th minute off some nice quick work with the ball. The Runnin' Bulldogs won the ball in the Eagles defensive third and Marius Hammersmark played a quick 1-2 pass with Chris Davis that set up Hammersmark free in the box. He then played a ball to the top of the six-yard box in front of the net and Jordan Taylor hammered it home as defenders closed in on him.

The best chance for the Eagles came in the 7th minute off a set piece. Josh Mort stepped up and delivered a long throw into the box that slipped through the hands of Scott Krotee as Magnus Thorsson ran on but he couldn't keep the ball down on his header and it connected with the crossbar and shot out for the Runnin' Bulldogs defense to clear.

Both teams got forward a lot in the match and created several opportunities as the Eagles finished the game with a 22-17 advantage in shots. Krotee finished with four saves while Enrique Miranda made six.

Winthrop will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Virginia Military Institute at 3 p.m. while Gardner-Webb travels to Lynchburg, VA on Saturday to take on Liberty at 2 p.m.
