BUIES CREEK, NC—
The Winthrop men's soccer team suffered a 5-2 loss at Campbell, Saturday evening in Big South Conference action.

With the loss the Eagles fall to 6-6 on the year and 2-2 in the league. Campbell improves to 8-4-1 on the year and evens its league record to 3-3.

Campbell struck early with a goal in the 11th minute by Justin Franz as he ripped a shot from outside the box after being set up by Isaiah Page and Mitchell Cardenas. The Camels struck again in the 20th minute as Jhuvon Francis netted his fourth of the season after putting home a rebound after a shot by Page.

For the second time in three games, Winthrop was on the unlucky end of a free kick as Cardenas' free kick from top of the box hit the wall and went into the goal for a 3-0 lead in the 50th minute. Winthrop suffered the same fate against High Point when Shawn Sloan's free kick from 25 yards out hit the wall and went the opposite direction of the goalie.

The fourth goal came on an own goal in the 57th minute and a fifth was added in the 69th minute on a goal by Ben Iiames.

Matt Sluga nearly ruined the Camels opportunity for a shutout as his shot in the 70th minute.

The Eagles added two goals late to spoil Campbell's attempt at a sixth shutout for the season. The first goal came in the 81st minute as Mason Lavallet netted his fifth goal of the season as he headed home a shot. Alex Isern recorded a point for the seventh straight match after scoring his fifth goal of the season in the 85th minute after Campbell's defense failed to clear the ball.

Campbell finished the game with a 20-10 advantage in shots as Winthrop starter Tom Banfield finished with six saves and Campbell starting goalie Ethan Hall recorded two.

Winthrop wraps up its three-game road stretch on Wednesday, Oct. 17 as it heads to nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
