ROCK HILL, SC – Winthrop scored a school record six goals in a home Big South Conference game, as five different Lady Eagles found the back of the net in a 6-1 victory over VMI, Thursday evening at Eagle Field.

The Lady Eagles improve to 7-6-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the Big South Conference, while the Keydets drop to 1-12 overall and 0-7 in conference action.

“We scored some nice goals out there tonight,” said head coach Spencer Smith.  “I felt like we knocked the ball around well but at times we got a little too impatient and tried to play too direct.  Everybody got an opportunity to pay tonight and performed well.”

Winthrop got out in front of VMI 3-0 in the first half and never looked back.  Grace Radler opened up the scoring for the Lady Eagles with her fourth goal of the season in the 28th minute when she tapped in a rebound inside the 6-yard box.  Imani Ervins would increase the Winthrop lead to 2-0 in the 33rd minute when she lofted her shot over the Keydet goalkeeper from the near side corner of the 18-yard box for her second goal of the season.  Taylor Walton pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 37th minute after she stripped a VMI defender and beat the goalkeeper one on one low to the near side for her first career goal.

The Lady Eagles would match their offensive output in the second half on a pair of goals from Krystyna Freda in the 66th and 70th minute and a Kylie Long penalty-kick in the 72nd minute.  With two goals, Freda now has nine goals for the season including three multi-goal games.  Long's goal was her first of the year.

The Keydets got on the board with just 12 seconds remaining on the clock after being awarded a penalty-kick of their own.  Simone Jimenez stepped to the spot and converted for her first goal of the season.

Winthrop was aggressive offensively from the opening moments of the game, finishing with match with 24 shots, 12 in each half.  The aggression also resulted in 17 offside calls.  VMI finished the match with seven shots.  Keydet goalkeeper Mackenzie Harrmann made eight saves in net including a pair of one on one saves against Freda in the first half.  Sarah Schippers made one save in net for the Lady Eagles.

Winthrop returns to action on Saturday when it faces Radford at 4:00 p.m. at Eagle Field.  There will be eight Lady Eagles honored on senior day.
