ROCK HILL, SC—After opening up the season with three straight games at home, the Winthrop men's soccer team will have its work cut out as the next four games will come on the road beginning with the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational this weekend.
Winthrop, off to its first 3-0 start since the 2006 season, will face a couple of tough opponents this weekend in Greenville, SC as it takes on the College of Charleston Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Furman Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Following this weekend, Winthrop will then travel to Davidson and Marshall in its next two matches.
The College of Charleston is off to a 1-1-1 start after defeating South Carolina in its opener and tying Princeton. The only loss was 2-1 against Rutgers, which is off to a 2-1 start. The Cougars, currently 7
th in the NSCAA South Regional, finished the 2010 season ranked 29
th by TopDrawerSoccer.com and 36
th by CollegeSoccerNews.com. College of Charleston won the previous meeting in 2010, 3-1, at Eagle Field.
Furman is 2-1-1 on the year after wins over Rutgers and Princeton and is ranked 5
th in the NSCAA South Region. It will be the first time Winthrop and Furman have faced each other since the 1996 season in Rock Hill, SC when the Paladins won 5-0. Winthrop is 0-5 all-time against Furman.
Winthrop has shown a strong ability to be able to score so far this season with 11 goals in three games and has pulled out two wins in double-overtime. Freshman
Akeem Matthews scored a hat trick in the win over Georgia Southern and
Alex Mantchev has posted three goals on the year with two goals in the come-from-behind win over Wofford.
Goals will be hard to come by this weekend as Furman has only allowed two goals in three games and the Cougars allowed four in three games.
