DAVIDSON, NC—
Davidson College scored two goals in the first half and the Winthrop men's soccer team never recovered as it fell 2-0, Wednesday evening in non-conference action.

The loss is the third straight for Winthrop, which falls to 3-3 on the year while Davidson improves to 3-1-1.

The Wildcats scored their first goal off a set piece in the 15th minute. A Davidson player ran down the sideline unmarked and received a throw-in. The player took the ball toward the end line and served it in front of the goal mouth. The ball bounced a couple of different ways before popping out away from the goal and right to Max Riehemann, who ripped the ball from eight yards away into the back of the net before Winthrop's Daniel Di Biagio could slide in front of the shot.

Not long after the first goal, Davidson struck again on another set piece. This time the Wildcats took advantage of one of their 15 corner kicks as Hunter Hayes headed home his first goal of the season off a service from Alex Givens in the 20th minute.

“I was very disappointed in the first half with our tentative play and energy level,” said Winthrop head coach Rich Posipanko. “However, the second half we came out and played with more energy and were able to get forward and create some chances. We still haven't been able to put a full 90 minutes together yet.”

The Eagles didn't have much success in the first half, but were able to push forward and possess the ball more in the second half. However, the Eagles never could muster up a quality scoring chance as they pushed forward several times in the second half.

After scoring 11 goals in the team's first four games of the season, Winthrop has not scored a goal in the last 227:38 of play.

Patrick Walsh, making his first start in an Eagle uniform, made four saves in the loss. His counterpart Chip Sanders made two saves.

Winthrop will remain on the road as it heads to Huntington, WV for a 1 p.m. match-up with Marshall on Sunday, Sept. 18.
