ROCK HILL, SC—The men's soccer team hopes to end a two-game skid with a tough road test at Davidson College Wednesday evening.

After a 3-0 start to the season, Winthrop dropped a 4-1 decision to the College of Charleston and 2-0 to Furman last weekend.

The Eagles take on a Davidson team that is 2-1-1 on the year with wins over Gardner-Webb and Air Force and its tie against 19th-ranked Denver. Both wins and the tie were shutouts as the Wildcats have only yielded two goals all season, which came in the loss to Detroit. Davidson came in at 9th in the latest NSCAA/South Region Ranking.

These two teams meet for the first time since the Charlotte/Nike Invitational in 2008 as the Eagles were able to hold on for a 1-0 victory. Miquel Casajuana scored the only goal of the match in the 62nd minute. However, Davidson leads the all-time series 9-5-1 and won the last meeting at Alumni Stadium in 1996, 5-2.

The Wildcats are led by their senior goalkeeper Chip Sanders, who has kept the slate pretty clean so far this season. Sanders has great size in the net at 6-5 and has been a three-year starter. He had eight career shutouts entering the 2011 season and already has three in four games. The defense is anchored by seniors Hunter Hayes, Greg MacNamara and Allen Page. Offensively the Wildcats didn't return a lot of offensive power, but an experienced back line, along with Sanders make it extremely tough to find the back of the net.

The Eagles enter the game with an offense ranked 20th nationally in total goals with 11. There must be something about playing under the lights because Winthrop is 3-0 in night games with 10 goals while going 0-2 with one goal in its two day games.

Junior Alex Mantchev and freshman Akeem Matthews lead the team with three goals each. Junior Alex Isern leads the team with two assists.

Head coach Rich Posipanko, who missed Sunday's game at Furman with an illness, will return to the sidelines.
