ROCK HILL, SC—
The Winthrop men's soccer team dropped its second straight match after falling 2-0 to Furman, Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational.
The Paladins scored two second half goals as they improved to 4-1-1 on the year and Winthrop falls to 3-2.
The first strike of the game for Furman came in the 58th minute on a fortunate bounce. After the ball was served into the box by Furman, a couple of players collided and the ball bounced out toward Coleton Henning, who took a couple of steps and ripped a shot to the lower left corner from about 12 yards away straight on from goal. The shot was just out of reach of junior Enrique Miranda as the ball found the side of the net just inside the post.
Furman scored an insurance goal in the 74th minute when Adrian McInnis threw the ball in from the side to the middle of the 18-yard box. The ball sailed over a group of players leaping for the ball, bounced in the box and George Frandenburg ran on to the ball at the back post and headed the ball off the bounce back to the far right corner.
Winthrop's best opportunity to tie the game came in the 68th minute when junior Alex Isern delivered a ball into the box behind the Furman defense. The ball dropped right in front of junior Alex Mantchev and he struck a shot off the short hop as a defender bodied him and but the shot went wide.
Miranda kept the Eagles in the match by making two big saves in the first half and finished the game with eight saves.
Winthrop's Josh Choice and Isern were named to the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Winthrop head coach Rich Posipanko did not make the trip for the game due to illness.
The Eagles will look to get back on track Wednesday, Sept. 14 when they take on Davidson on the road with kick-off set for 7 p.m.
