ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop softball team will wrap-up its home schedule for the regular season on Tuesday as it hosts Gardner-Webb in a single game at 5 p.m. at Terry Field.
The game will wrap-up the regular season series between the two schools as Winthrop has already taken the series with a double-header sweep of the Runnin' Bulldogs last week.
Winthrop is hoping to rebound after four straight losses against a team it swept a double-header from last Wednesday on the road.
The Eagles scored 12 runs in two games against the Runnin' Bulldogs in the two games last week, but managed just seven runs in the four games over the weekend. Winthrop led in all four games, but allowed a total of 19 runs after the fourth inning.
Chelsey Schoenfeldt extended her hitting streak to 16 games as she ripped a double down the right field line in the 3rd inning and is now batting .409 on the year which is the best average in the Big South. Megan Chapman went 3-for-3 on Monday and is now second on the team in batting at .313.
Monday's loss pushed the Eagles to 1-10 in night games on the year as they are batting just .179 as a team and have scored just over one run per game. Winthrop will look to better those numbers Tuesday night.
After picking up wins against Radford and Presbyterian College at home, Gardner-Webb has since lost five straight starting with the double-header loss to the Eagles on April 13 at home. The Runnin' Bulldogs followed that up by getting swept by Liberty at home, which allowed the Flames to move into a tie with Radford for the most league wins with eight.
Samantha Meenaghan is leading the team with a .339 average and a team-best 19 runs and nine stolen bases. Morgan Baker is second on the team in hitting with a .315 average and has 17 runs and 17 RBI and is tied for the team lead in home runs with three.
Winthrop is going to see one of two starters as Cindy Boomhower and Jessica Childers have started 16 games apiece this season. Boomhower is 4-12 with a team-best 3.10 ERA with 43 strikeouts and 18 walks. Childers is 7-9 on the year with a 3.47 ERA and 82 strikeouts to 36 walks.
A win for the Eagles would put them one victory behind Presbyterian College in the league standings and all alone in fifth place. A loss would have both Winthrop and Gardner-Webb with four league wins.
