Baseball Defeats Notre Dame 7-2; Manhattan Game Postponed To Sunday

Eagles And Jaspers Will Play At Noon On Sunday

The Winthrop baseball team managed to play just one game on Saturday afternoon due to inclement weather, but walked away with a 7-2 win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on day two of the 2011 Coca-Cola Classic.

The Eagles even their record to 5-5 on the season, while the Fighting Irish fall to 4-6 overall.

Matteo D'Angelo (1-2) pitched 7.0 solid innings and gave up one run on five hits, no walks and three strikeouts to pick up the win on the mound. Tommy Lawrence (2) earned his second save in as many days throwing 1.2 scoreless innings of relief on one hit, one walk and three strikeouts. Anthony McIver (0-1) took the loss allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits, one walk and two strikeouts.

Winthrop scored the first runs of the contest by plating three in the bottom of third inning highlighted by a one-out two RBI single to center field by Chas Crane bringing home Adam Gliebe and Patrick Gamblin. Gamblin drove home Cam Walters with an RBI single to start the scoring in the third.

The Eagles increased their lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning on Eddie Rohan's RBI double down the left field line. Crane scored all the way from first base on the double by Rohan after reaching on a throwing error by Mick Doyle at shortstop.

Notre Dame cut their deficit to 4-1 in the top of the seventh on a leadoff home run to right center field by Eric Jagielo against D'Angelo. It was Jagielo's first long ball of the season.

Winthrop answered back with two runs of its own in the bottom of the seventh inning to make it 6-1 on Gamblin's first homer of the season over the left field fence.

The Fighting Irish trimmed it to 6-2 in the eighth after Ricky Palmer scored on Jagielo's bases loaded walk off reliever Matt Pierpont. Notre Dame then loaded the bases again with one out when the Eagles brought in Lawrence. Lawrence came in and got Joe Hudson to strike out and Trey Mancini to groundout to Gliebe at shortstop.

Winthrop got the one run back in the bottom-half of the eighth inning to make it a 7-2 game on Gliebe's RBI bunt single scoring TJ Olesczuk, who led off the inning with an infield single.

Rohan led the Eagles offensively with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, while Gamblin posted a team-high three RBI. Doyle had a team-best two hits for Notre Dame, and Jagielo drove in all two runs.

Winthrop's nightcap game against the Manhattan Jaspers has been postponed and will be made-up on Sunday, Mar. 6. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. on the final day of the 2011 Coca-Cola Classic.
