Winthrop Will Look To End Six-Game Skid Against Dartmouth Sunday

TAMPA, FL – Winthrop softball dropped both its games on Saturday at the USF The Game Tournament as it has now lost six straight games.

The Eagles fall to 6-18 on the year and will look to end the losing streak on Sunday at noon when they face Dartmouth in the final game of the tournament.

Winthrop opened the day with the 7-1 loss to Jacksonville (18-11) as Jackie Samuels held Winthrop's offense in check allowing just one run on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts to earn her first victory of the season (1-0).

The Eagles were in front 1-0 after the second inning as Teja Durante singled to third, scoring Courtney Gaddy. Brittany Stoudemire reached on an error and advanced to second. At that point Gaddy came in as a pinch-runner and was moved to third on a sacrifice by Kelly Blea.

The Dolphins responded right away with three runs in the top of the third to take the lead. Amanda Schmidt led off with a singled to right and scored on a double to right field by Sarah Simon. After Ashleigh Jackson struck out the next batter, Karson Tuck singled to right and scored Simon for a 2-1 lead. Miranda Fleming made it 3-1 when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Jacksonville made it 4-1 in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Simon and then went up 7-0 in the top of the seventh after a three-run shot to left center by Fleming.

Jackson suffered the loss as she allowed six earned runs on 13 hits with four walks and three strikeouts as she is now 2-5 on the year.

Winthrop dropped its sixth in a row when it fell to Boston 4-1 as the offense failed to score more than two runs for the sixth straight game.

The Terriers got on the board in the first inning with two outs as Brittany Clendenny reached on an error by Megan Chapman, which allowed Erica Casacci to score from second base.

Winthrop had a lead-off runner in the second inning, but a double-play ended the inning and then a lead-off runner in the third inning that was followed by another double-play turned by the Boston infield.

Cassaci led off the bottom of the third by drawing a walk and moved to third after a single from Chelsea Kehr. Clendenny followed with a single up the middle for a 2-0 lead. Megan Volpano and Whitney Tuthill each drove in runs later in the inning for a 4-0 lead.

Winthrop's lone run came in the sixth as Chapman scored on a Stoudemire single up the middle.

Chelsey Schoenfeldt sufferd the loss and is now 1-6 on the year as she allowed three earned runs on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout in five innings.
