ROCK HILL, SC—Senior Ashleigh Jackson hurled a one-hit shutout and Megan Chapman stole home to lead Winthrop to a 2-0 win over George Washington on Saturday night and give the Eagles a split on day two of the 2011 Winthrop/adidas Invitational being held at Terry Field.
Winthrop lost in the first game of day by the score of 6-1 to Cleveland State and are now 2-2 in the tournament and 5-12 on the season.
Jackson struck out eight Colonials and allowed a first inning single by GW shortstop Katie Terrazas. Jackson is now 3-2 on the mound this season.
The Eagles manufactured a run in the third inning when Chapman drew a one-out walk and moved to second when Jackson was hit by a pitch. Chelsey Schoenfeldt then grounded into a fielder's choice advancing Chapman to third. Coach Mark Cooke then put on a double steal. GW had a play on to cut the runner down at the plate, but catcher Jillian Stanley's tag missed Chapman who made a head first slide into home plate.
Winthrop added an insurance run in the sixth inning against GW reliever Heidi Penna. Schoenfeldt opened the inning with an infield single. Paige Hartfield was entered to pinch run and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Veronica Berrie. Kathryn Eberlin then reached first base on an infield pop up that dropped for a hit and Hartfield moved to third. Cooke then had Lauren Levin lay down a squeeze bunt that scored Hartfield. Levin was safe at first on the infield hit and GW could not make a play.
GW starting pitcher Kara Clauss took the loss as her season record fell to 6-4. The Colonials are now 7-6 on the season.
In the first game of the day Winthrop could never put anything together at the plate against Cleveland State righthander Tess Sito who struck out 10 Eagles and held them to to s single run in the 5th inning.
The Eagles' lone run came after Kathryn Eberlin lined a double to the gap in left-center field and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Jenna Harbin.
CSU put two three spots on the scoreboard in the fourth and seventh innings as the Vikings touched up Winthrop pitcher Chelsey Schoenfeldt for 10 hits and all six runs. Four of the runs, however, were unearned. CSU got six of its hits from three different players. Jessica Burt, Andrea Nagy and Kala Allred had two hits each.
The loss drops Schoenfeldt's record to 0-2 while Sito improves to 7-2 for the Vikings.
Winthrop will close out play in the tournament on Sunday at 11 a.m. as the Eagles face George Washington once again at Terry Field.
