ROCK HILL, SC—
After a few days off from games, the Winthrop women's basketball team will be back in action this weekend when it hosts South Carolina State Saturday evening. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Winthrop Coliseum.
The game occurs right in the middle of all Winthrop students taking exams as the Lady Eagles look to end a four-game skid.
Winthrop (2-5) is coming off a tough road loss at Davidson College on Dec. 1 and faces a South Carolina State (3-4) squad that is coming off a 75-69 road win at Norfolk State.
A trio of double-figure scorers continues to lead Winthrop offensively as sophomore Dequesha McClanahan leads the way at 19.4 points per game. McClanahan has scored 20 or more points in back-to-back games and now has four games with 20 or more. She had four in the entire 2010-11 season.
Junior Diana Choibekova is averaging 17.4 points and is knocking down an average of 4.3 three-pointers per game. Red-shirt freshman Samiya Wright is also averaging double-figures at 10.7 and coming off a career-high 15 points at Davidson. Wright is shooting an impressive 48 percent from the field and even more impressive 58 percent from behind the arc (11-for-19).
On the season, Winthrop is averaging just 16.1 turnovers per game but has committed a total of 67 in the past three games. In the two games the Lady Eagles have won, the team turned the ball over an average of 12.5 times.
Winthrop is averaging 68.7 points offensively while South Carolina State enters the game with a 56.6 average, but posted 75 in the win on Monday.
Junior guard Tiara Knotts leads the Bulldogs offensively as she's the only player in double-figures at 13.3 per game. She's led the team in scoring five times this season and has done so in two of the three wins. Knotts scored a season-high 28 points in a three-point loss to Charleston Southern.
Juniors Trinese Fox and Cabriel Duren along with senior Tracey Flowers all average around seven points per game. Fox is second on the team at 7.9 and leads the team in free throw attempts with 37 (68 percent). Duren is averaging 7.6 points and is tops on the team with 28 assists while Flowers averages 7.5 points and is shooting an impressive 63 percent from the field.
Winthrop is 5-12 all-time against South Carolina State, but has won three of the last five meetings, including the last two games. The last meeting in Orangeburg, SC in 2007 with the Lady Eagles prevailing 70-58.
