BOONE, NC—
Appalachian State scored two goals in the second half en route to handing the Winthrop men's soccer team its seventh consecutive setback in a 3-0 loss, Wednesday evening in non-conference action.
The Eagles fail to score in the sixth straight match and fall to 3-7 overall on the season. Appalachian State improved to 6-2-2 overall and extended an unbeaten streak to seven games.
“A lot of credit to Appalachian State,” said Winthrop head coach Rich Posipanko. “They worked extremely hard and are a very good, well coached team. We had a few mental lapses that allowed them to break our defense down and didn't finish the few chances that we had. We are looking forward to the last of the eight games in a row on the road at VMI Saturday and returning home for five of our last seven games.”
The first goal came off a set piece in the 32nd minute. An Appalachian State player tossed a throw-in into the box that hit the ground and bounced toward the back post where Sean Dreybus was waiting and hit a one-touch shot that found the back of the net. That was enough for a 1-0 lead for the Mountaineers at the half.
The game was within reach heading into the final 20 minutes of the match until Boubacar Toure shook a couple of Winthrop defenders outside the box and then ripped a shot to the lower left corner for a 2-0 lead.
Less than four minutes later, Appalachian State took advantage of another set piece. A free kick around midfield on the left side was drilled to the far right where Stanley Broaden collected the ball, took a touch and then served a ball to the top of the 18-yard box. Dreybus was running on and his one-touch volley from just outside the top of the box was drilled into the left corner of the goal.
Winthrop's best chance of the game came with less than five minutes left in the first half as Josh Goldstein's throw-in launched into the box in front of goal. The ball bounced and Matt Sluga tried to turn a hit a shot from 12 yards out, but the shot sailed over the bar as he couldn't quite turn as much as he needed.
Sluga nearly set up a goal for the Eagles early on in the second half when he collected a ball at the back post, took a couple of dribbles toward the end line and then served a ball in front of the net at the six-yard box as Alex Mantchev was running on, but an App State defender just got his foot in the way and knocked the ball out for a Winthrop corner kick.
It was the sixth straight game that the Eagles failed to score a goal and the scoreless streak has now reached 587 minutes and 38 seconds.
Enrique Miranda was back in goal for the Eagles and finished with four saves, including a couple that kept it a one-goal game for a while in the second half. Collin Taylor finished with no saves to earn the shutout, the sixth of the season for the Mountaineers.
The Eagles will travel to Lexington, VA for a 1 p.m. match-up with Virginia Military Institute Saturday, Oct. 8, which is the last game of eight straight on the road.
