ROCK HILL, SC—
Winthrop allowed three goals in each half en route to a 6-0 loss at the hands of 13th-ranked Coastal Carolina, Saturday afternoon in Big South Conference men's soccer action.
The loss is the worst loss by a Winthrop team since its 8-1 defeat to Coastal Carolina in the semi-finals of the Big South Conference Tournament in 2003. It's the worst regular season defeat since the 2000 season in a 6-0 home loss to Liberty. It's also the second 6-0 defeat this season as the Eagles lost at High Point 6-0 on Oct. 1.
Winthrop falls to 6-10 on the year and 3-4 in the Big South while the Chanticleers improve to 14-2 overall and a perfect 7-0 in the league.
Trailing 3-0 at the half, Winthrop hoped to try and work its way back into the match a goal at a time but Coastal Carolina had other plans. The Chanticleers caught the Eagles defense sleeping in the opening moments of the second half and made it 4-0 just 22 seconds into the second half. Pedro Ribeiro received the ball and worked his way down the middle of the field before slipping a pass behind the Eagles defense to Ashton Bennett running on. Bennett placed a shot to the lower left corner of the goal for a 4-0 lead, his second of the game.
Bennett led the nation in total goals coming into the match and now has 18 on the year.
Coastal's first goal of the match was a gift from the Eagles. A Coastal player tossed a throw-in toward the front post, trying to hit the head of Ribeiro but the ball popped off a couple of a players and bounced backward. A Winthrop player turned and tried to clear the ball, but the ball shot off the end of his shoe and went into the right side of the goal. That goal came in the 21st minute of play.
The Chanticleers didn't wait long to make it 2-0 as Ribeiro netted his fifth goal of the season in the 22nd minute. Ribeiro stepped up and took a free kick to the left of Winthrop keeper Enrique Miranda about 10 yards off the sideline. Ribeiro stepped back and bent the shot into the top left corner, just over the reach of Miranda.
The third goal came on a rebound as Bennett scored after the ball bounced to him after Ricky Garbanzo's attempt at a bicycle kick hit the crossbar. Bennett settled the shot off the bar and then tucked it away.
Cyprian Hedrick scored in the 60th minute to make it 5-0 as he headed home a ball in front of the net from about eight yards out. Hedrick was set up by Kjartan Sigurdsson, who headed a cross from Garbanzo back across the goal mouth.
Jordan Schmoker made it 6-0 in the 70th minute when he positioned himself in the right spot as TeeJay East headed toward Winthrop keeper Tom Banfield for a one-on-one. East tried to beat Banfield to the far post, but was turned away. However, the save went right across the front of goal to Schmoker's foot and he settled with one touch before passing the ball into the net from about six yards out.
Coastal Carolina's Scott Angevine finished with two saves and his sub Montrell Morgan made one save as the two combined to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard. Miranda finished with four saves while Banfield had three.
The Chanticleers finished the game with a 26-8 advantage in shots and the two saves Angevine had to make were shots outside the 18-yard box that were ripped right down the middle of the frame.
Alex Isern had a chance in the 38th minute as he tried to back heel a shot from six yards after a throw-in bounced in front of the goal mouth. The attempt just sailed over the crossbar. In the 62nd minute, Sean Comer was set up on a long run and retrieved a through ball heading toward goal. Comer came in from an angle with a free look at goal and ripped a left footed shot to the near post, but the shot was turned away by Morgan.
Winthrop, which has two regular season games left, will be back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 2 when it travels to Boiling Springs, NC to take on Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m. Winthrop will then wrap-up the regular season at home on Saturday, Nov. 5 at noon when it hosts Radford.
