ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop men's soccer hits the road to take on Liberty in a match-up Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Osborne Stadium.

The Eagles, in search of their second conference win, are 4-9 and face a Liberty team that is looking to keep pace with the upper half of the conference standings.

The Flames are currently 7-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the Big South and are coming off a 0-0 tie with VMI at home on Tuesday. It was only the second time the Flames had been shutout this season. Liberty came into the week ranked seventh nationally at 2.36 goals per game. Defensively Liberty has earned five shutouts and giving up 1.08 goals per game. In five games this season, Liberty is 4-0-1 at home and averaging 3.4 goals a game.

It will be the 32nd meeting all-time between Winthrop and Liberty when the two teams take the field Saturday. The series is owned by Liberty with a record of 20-9-2 against the Eagles. The last visit to Osborne Stadium by the Eagles was not a kind one as Liberty won 3-0. Winthrop is 2-2-1 against Liberty in the last five contests.
The first two visits ever to Liberty worked out pretty good for the Eagles as they picked up a 1-0 victory in 1992 and a 2-1 victory in 1994. Since then, Winthrop has lost seven straight games at Liberty and five of them have been one-goal games.

The Flames are led by senior Phillip Aseweh's five goals and six assists, which is second best in the Big South Conference with 1.33 points per game. Junior Travis Joseph and senior Timothy Bullock are tied for second on the team with 12 points at four goals and four assists apiece.
Freshman Josh Pacella has handled most of the duties in net all season long with 10 games played and a 6-4 record. He's posted a 1.34 goals against average and has two shutouts.

Winthrop is coming off one of its worst performances of the season in a 3-1 loss at home to Campbell on Saturday evening as the Eagles were outshot 28-5 and were nearly shutout for the eighth time this season before sophomore Mason Lavallet scored his first collegiate goal in the 86th minute.

Enrique Miranda made a career-best 10 saves in the match to keep the Eagles within reach and that included stopping a penalty shot in the 31st minute of the match with Campbell up 1-0.

With VMI earning a tie on Tuesday at Liberty, the Eagles are now on the outside looking in for the 2011 Big South Conference Tournament. Winthrop has five games remaining to work its way into the tournament, with three of the matches being at home.
