ROCK HILL, SC— Campbell scored two second half goals to hand the Winthrop men's soccer team its second straight loss and ninth in the last 10 games in a 3-1 victory, Saturday evening at Eagle Field.
Winthrop falls to 4-9 on the year and drops to 1-3 in the Big South while Campbell evens its record overall to 6-6-2 and 2-2 in the league.
Campbell's Keegan Terry put the Camels on the scoreboard in the 20
th minute as he positioned himself in the perfect spot. Brian Urioste received the ball wide around the top of the box and turned to hit a shot toward frame. The shot hit a Winthrop defender and popped up and over goalie
Enrique Miranda's head and bounced off the far post and back across the mouth of the goal. As Miranda ran to collect the ball Terry beat him to the ball and poked it into the net from a couple yards out.
It could have been 2-0 Camels in the 31
st minute when a penalty kick was awarded after a player was taken down inside the box. Mitchell Cardenas stepped up to attempt the penalty, but his shot was saved as Miranda dove to his right to make the save. It's the second penalty kick save for Miranda in the last seven days as he turned one away last Saturday in the victory at Virginia Military Institute.
Winthrop was still in the match, trailing 1-0 at the half and midway through the second half until it paid for a defensive mistake. Campbell was awarded a free kick outside of the box to the left of Miranda in goal. Cardenas served the free kick into the box across the mouth of the goal but it was headed back out by a Winthrop defender toward the left corner of the box. Cardenas ran over and collected the clear and no defenders closed in on him so he hit a shot that found its way over Miranda's head and just under the crossbar. That goal came in the 76
th minute and was Cardenas second on the year.
The third goal came just moments after the second as Justin Franz scored his second of the year. Campbell earned a free kick from about 40-45 yards out straight on from goal. Franz ripped the free kick toward goal and the shot hit a Winthrop defender just inside the 18-yard box and redirected toward the lower right corner. Miranda was able to get a hand on the shot, but not enough as the ball was nearly past him and found its way into the net.
The Eagles did manage to avoid a shutout with a goal in the 86
th minute when
Mason Lavallet scored his first collegiate goal.
Marc Segarra received a pass in the box and gave a quick pass to his left to Lavallet running on, who then took a couple of touches and then ripped a shot near post to beat Ethan Hall.
Hall finished with no saves in the match, but improved his record in goal to 3-1-2 on the year. Miranda faced a career-high 28 shots and made a career-best 10 saves as he falls to 4-5 on the year.
Winthrop will remain at home for a third straight contest when it hosts Radford University on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m.
