Men's Soccer Loses 4-0 At Georgia Southern For Third Straight Loss

Eagles Drop Third In A Row

STATESBORO, GA—The Winthrop men's soccer team suffered its third straight loss as it fell 4-0 at Georgia Southern, Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.

Winthrop allowed three second half goals, all of which came after the Eagles went a man down when center back Daniel Di Biagio was sent off after a second yellow card.

The Eagles fall to 2-4 on the year and have been shutout three straight games for the first time since 1995 when they suffered four straight shutout losses. Georgia Southern is now 3-2-1 on the year and has won two straight.

The first half was uneventful as neither team created many chances, but GSU broke through in the 30th minute on a 25-yard rip by Jon Cox to the lower right corner past a diving Enrique Miranda. Muhamed Sidibeh took the ball near the end line and then passed back to Cox, who was wide open in the middle.

Winthrop's only chance in the first half came in the 24th minute when Adam Skonicki flicked a header over the top of the defense to Andres Pullin running on. Pullin tried to push the ball over the keepers head as he ran on to the bouncing ball, but missed and Georgia Southern was able to clear.

Offensively Winthrop picked it up a little bit in the second half, but the best chance came from Pullin again with under 10 minutes to play. Winthrop played a short corner and Pullin dribbled the ball into the box, beat a defender and then tried to sneak a shot near post, but the ball went just wide.

In the 85th minute, Winthrop suffered a setback as DiBiagio was sent off with a second yellow card. Off the foul, Georgia Southern took advantage on a free kick from 40 yards out. Cox played a ball down the left side to Ethan LaPan, who dribbled into the box uncontested and hit a shot past Miranda and off the crossbar into the net for the insurance goal. Less than two minutes later GSU struck again when Luigi Clendening beat three Winthrop defenders off the dribble and slipped a shot by Miranda to the near post. Cox added his second goal of the game in the 90th minute after his one touch shot from the top of the box off a deflection made its way to the lower right corner.

Miranda finished the game with one save and GSU keeper Neal Bates was not forced to make a save.

Winthrop will try and regroup as it has the next four days off from games before it hosts Liberty on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. in its Big South Conference opener.
