ROCK HILL, SC—Sitting at 2-2 on the season, the Winthrop men's soccer team looks to move above .500 as it heads to Johnson City, TN to take on East Tennessee State University Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
It will be the first time the two schools have ever met as ETSU started its program in 2008.
Winthrop is coming off a 1-0 loss at #23 UNC Wilmington this past Sunday on the road and the Bucs are coming off a 2-0 loss against Evansville. The Eagles outshot the Seahawks 12-9 and had several chances to score in the second half. It was the first time since Aug. 29, 2008 that Winthrop has out shot an opponent and lost the game. The Eagles had a 17-4 shot advantage on Belmont that day, but lost 1-0 in double-overtime.
ETSU is also 2-2 on the year with wins over Bradley and Clemson. In each of their two losses, the Eagles and Bucs have each been shutout. Guilherme Reis and Itode Fubara each have game-winning goals for ETSU. Reis is a senior defender and Fubara is a freshman forward. In the loss to Evansville, the Bucs had the shot advantage 13-7.
Senior Miquel Casajuana and junior Ted Bartels have the game-winners for the Eagles this season. Winthrop has five goals in the two wins and has yielded four goals in the two losses. In addition to his game-winner over Brevard College, Casajuana is tied for 49th nationally in total assists. Junior forward Andres Pullin is coming off his best weekend as an Eagle in which he was named the Courtyard by Marriott/UNCW Classic Offensive MVP after a goal and an assist in the win over Long Island. One interesting note is all of the Eagles goals this season have been scored by a different player.
The Eagles are on the third of four games away from Eagle Field before they return home on Saturday, Sept. 25 to open Big South action against Liberty. Winthrop is 0-1 so far this season against the Atlantic Sun, having lost to Mercer.
