JOHNSON CITY, TN – Terri Miller's header in the 103rd minute gave the East Tennessee State Buccaneers a 2-1 double-overtime victory over the Winthrop Eagles on Sunday afternoon at Summers-Taylor Stadium on the final day of the 2010 ETSU Soccer Invitational presented by DoubleTree Hotel.
The Eagles fall to 0-4-1 on the season, while the Buccaneers are now 4-2-1 overall.
“It's a tough loss,” said head coach Spencer Smith. “We played well in spurts today, but in the end our effort wasn't to the level of East Tennessee State's.”
The game-winner by Miller was her second goal of the contest, which came off a cross from Genna Peterson.
Winthrop took a 1-0 lead over East Tennessee State in the 11th minute of play on Tricia Vensel's team-leading second goal of the season. Vensel received a pass from Allie VandeWater and proceeded to put her shot past Buccaneer goalie Megan Masch from eight yards out. The assist by VandeWater gives her a team-high three on the season.
East Tennessee State came out quickly in the second half and tied the game at 1-1 on Miller's first goal of the match on a through ball past the Eagle defense by Courtney Deem. The pass by Deem left Miller for a breakaway opportunity against Winthrop goalkeeper Kelsy Weavil, and Miller put her shot past Weavil for the equalizer.
The Eagles had a chance to take a 2-1 lead in the 82nd minute over the Buccaneers, but Vensel's shot would hit off the right post.
East Tennessee State outshot Winthrop 18-8 on the afternoon and led in shots on-goal 6-4. The Buccaneers also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Vensel led the Eagles offensively with three shots and two attempts on-net. Ramey Kerns posted a team-best five shots for East Tennessee State, while Kelly Brinkman added four shots.
Weavil finished the contest grabbing four saves, and Masch had three saves.
Courtney Durbin was named to the ETSU Soccer Invitational presented by DoubleTree Hotel All-Tournament Team for Winthrop.
The Eagles will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 17 as they will host the Georgia State Panthers at 7 p.m.
