Eagle Soccer Bounces Back With 3-0 Win Over Long Island

Miranda Made Three Saves To Earn The Win In Net

Winthrop Defeats Long Island, Which Came In Ranked 5th In NSCAA North Atlantic Region

WILMINGTON, NC—Three different players scored as the Winthrop men's soccer team defeated Long Island 3-0, Friday evening at the Courtyard by Marriott/UNCW Classic.

Junior Ted Bartels scored less than a minute into the game as his blast from 30 yards out beat keeper Adam Janssen to the low corner. It is the second goal of Bartels career and the first since he scored on Sept. 23, 2006 in an 8-1 win over Liberty at home. Junior Andres Pullin made it 2-0 in the 29th minute. Pullin was dribbling the ball straight on goal about 30 yards out when he faked a shot with his right foot, cut back and then ripped the shot to the lower right corner.

“I was very pleased with our effort and work rate today, which was lacking in our last game,” said head coach Rich Posipanko. “I was also pleased with the improvement from the last game to today. It's the first time we've had everyone available so far this season.”

Winthrop (2-1) made it 3-0 in the less than five minutes into the second half as Matt Stinson was set up nicely for his first collegiate goal. Pullin started things as he found Miquel Casajuana straight on just outside the 18-yard box and he slipped a ball forward to Stinson in stride, he took a touch and then buried a shot into the left corner.

Sophomore Enrique Miranda made three saves and kept the slate clean for 71 minutes before Michael Flato finished the game off as the Eagles recorded their second shutout of the season. Miranda didn't get tested all game as he tipped two long range shots over the bar as the defense held strong most of the game. Janssen finished the game with three saves while Nathan Stockie finished the game in goal for the Blackbirds and made two saves in 18 minutes.

Long Island entered the game 2-0 and ranked fifth in the NSCAA/Hendrickcars.com North Atlantic Region.

It was the first three goal win by the Eagles away from home since a neutral site, 4-1 victory over Lipscomb at the JAKO Classic on the campus of Gardner-Webb University. The win also marks the eighth straight season in which the Eagles have won two of their first three games to start the year.

Winthrop will face UNC Wilmington on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in its final game of the Courtyard by Marriott/UNCW Classic.
