ROCK HILL, SC –
Courtney Durbin scored a career-high two goals on Sunday afternoon as the Winthrop women's soccer team blanked the VMI Keydets 2-0 at Eagle Field.

The Eagles improve their overall record to 3-8-2 and 3-1-1 in the Big South, while the Keydets fall to 2-13 on the season and 1-4 in conference play.

“I thought it was a good win against a good VMI team,” said head coach Spencer Smith. “VMI is a well-coached and well-organized team. I was proud of the girls who came off the bench and gave us some quality minutes.”

Durbin's first goal of the afternoon came in the 5th minute after she received a pass from Rachel Webster and beat a VMI defender for a one-on-one opportunity against Keydet goalie Heidi Beemer. Durbin put her shot in the net past Beemer on the far side from 12-yards out.

Winthrop looked to add to its lead in the 30th minute on a shot by Kylie Long from the top of the 18-yard box, but Beemer made a jumping save and deflected the ball over the net.

VMI attempted to tie the game at 1-1 in the 32nd minute on a chance by Christelle Ndongo. The Eagles had a free kick on their side of the field and Anna Sammons attempted to make a quick pass to Katie Perkinson, but Ndongo intercepted the pass and was left with a breakaway opportunity against Winthrop goalkeeper Kelsy Weavil. Ndongo was unable to take advantage of the breakaway as she put her shot wide of the net.

The Eagles lead in shots for the first half 7-4 over the Keydets, including 6-2 in attempts on-net. Both teams took three corner kicks.

Lindsay Taylor had a team-high two shots, both on-goal, for Winthrop in the first half, while Weavil had two saves. Ndongo had three of the four shots for VMI and both shots on-goal.

Durbin added her second goal of the contest in the 63rd minute of play after a miscommunication between Beemer and a Keydet defender. The Keydet defender was shielding Durbin from the ball while Beemer came up to grab it, but in the process neither could decide who should take the ball. Durbin took advantage of the miscommunication as she stuck her foot in and chipped the ball into the open net.

The Eagle defense held VMI to only three second-half shot attempts, with two coming on its best scoring opportunity in the 84th minute. The initial shot by Amanda Berrios went over the head of Weavil and hit off the crossbar, but Berrios got the rebound and put that shot wide of the net.

Durbin, Taylor and Tricia Vensel each had three shots to lead Winthrop offensively, and Durbin and Taylor had two shots on-goal apiece. Weavil finished the afternoon with her second straight shutout after grabbing two saves. It is also the first time in her career that Weavil has recorded back-to-back shutouts.

Ndongo led the Keydets with three shots and two on-net, and Beemer added eight saves in net.

The Eagles finished with a 19-7 advantage in shots and 10-2 in shots on-goal. The 19 total shots and 10 on-goal are both season-highs for the team. Winthrop also led 8-5 in corner kicks.

Winthrop will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 22 as it hits the road for a 3:30 p.m. contest against the UNC Asheville Bulldogs.
