Men's Soccer Hosts VMI Tuesday Night In Big South Matchup

ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop men's soccer will look to bounce back from its 3-1 home loss to High Point last week as Virginia Military Institute comes to town for a 7 p.m. match up Tuesday night at Eagle Field.

As the Eagles look to even their Big South Conference record at 2-2, VMI is in search of its first win of the 2010 campaign. Winthrop is 3-6-1 overall and 1-2 in the league while VMI is 0-8-1 and 0-2 in the conference.

Winthrop is only 1-3 at home so far this season and the Keydets are 0-4 on the road. The Eagles have scored three goals in three home games and VMI scored three goals in its first road game, but hasn't scored in the last three.

Freshman Matt Stinson leads the Eagles in scoring with three goals while junior Andres Pullin has two. The Eagles made a change in net three games ago as Tom Banfield was called upon and so far he's 1-1-1 in his first collegiate starts. He has a 1.24 goals against average and recorded a shutout in his first collegiate start.

The Keydets have five goals on the year with five different players scoring. Brian Harding has recorded two assists. Senior Brian Sowell, who has a history of good performances against Winthrop, has played every second in goal for VMI.

The last three meetings have gone in favor of Winthrop and VMI is making just its fourth regular season trip to Eagle Field in school history. Winthrop leads the all-time series 10-0-2.
