SPARTANBURG, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team fell to Elon 1-0 on Sunday afternoon during the final day of the Carolinas Border Classic held at County University Soccer Stadium.

The Eagles record drops to 3-3 with the loss, while Elon improved to 3-2-1 with the victory.

The lone goal of the match by Elon came in the 35th minute of play via a penalty kick by Susannah Gianakos. Gianakos was awarded the penalty kick after she was tied up with an Eagle defender inside the penalty box.

Despite allowing the one goal, goalkeeper Dimi Poulos had another solid afternoon in the net for the Eagles as she snagged six saves.

The Elon offense applied pressure on the Winthrop defense all afternoon as they took a total of 18 shots, while the Eagles had only five shots. Ann Lutzenkirchen led Winthrop with three shots, while Erin Foote and Brittany Soto had one shot apiece.

“It was a hot day today,” said head coach Melissa Heinz. “We did some good things overall, but we did not take a lot of shots today and that hurt us.”

The Eagles will be back in action Friday, Sept. 19 as it will host Appalachian State at 7 p.m. at Eagle Field.
