ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team dropped its first game of the 2008 season as they were defeated by the Georgia State Panthers 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field.
The Eagles record fell to 1-1 with the defeat, while the Panthers improved to 3-0 with the victory.
Georgia State would strike first against Winthrop in the 4th minute of play as Apryl Goodwin received a pass from Kari Quinn and fought off a Winthrop defender to sneak the ball pass Dimi Poulos for an early 1-0 lead.
The Panthers would go ahead 2-0 in the 8th minute as Kara Vezza took a cross from Kristen McKillop and headed the ball pass Poulos.
Winthrop had chance in the first half to cut the lead to in half, but a shot by Ann Lutzenkirchen would be denied as it sailed past the goalie and hit the top post. The Eagles would have one last shot at the end of the first half to put some points on the board, but a shot by Chelsea Tidwell went wide of the net.
Quinn would add a goal of her own in the 58th minute unassisted as she scored after a shot from Georgia State was deflected by Poulos and ended up at Quinn's feet for the shot.
The final goal by Georgia State came from Kay Harbrueger off the assist from Goodwin. Harbrueger took the pass from Goodwin and managed to go one-on-one against Kelsy Weavil and found the back of the net with the shot.
Winthrop played hard all afternoon, both offensively and defensively. The Eagles offense took a total of 17 shots on the afternoon, five in the first half and 12 in the second half.
“The score doesn't show how hard we played this afternoon,” said head coach Melissa Heinz. “We play hard all game. We had a bunch of near misses at the goal, but we've got to find a way to finish and also find the net.”
Winthrop will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 5 as they travel to Annapolis, MD to face Navy on day one of the Navy Soccer Invitational.
