CHARLESTON, SC – Ryan Edell threw a complete game four-hitter and struck out a career-high 12 batters to lead the College of Charleston to a 3-0 victory over Winthrop in Tuesday night baseball action at Patriots Point Field in Charleston, SC.
The Cougars, ranked 25th in the latest Collegiate Baseball poll, have now won a school-record 12 straight games.
Edell improved to 4-1 with the win. He gave up just three singles and a double and did not walk a batter.
Jeff Reeves (1-3) was the hard-luck loser for the Eagles, giving up just two runs on four hits in six innings of work. He struck out three and walked three.
The Cougars got things going in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. Jess Easterling’s sacrifice fly drove in Brett Gardner to give the College of Charleston a 1-0 lead. Brian Hastings’ two-out single to left drove in Byron Barber to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
The Cougars added a run in the seventh to set the final score at 3-0.
Tommy Lentz and Bennett Stapf had a hit each to extend their respective hitting streaks to seven games.
The game lasted just two hours and nine minutes, despite starting 44 minutes late due to rain.
The Cougars improved to 21-5 with the win, while the Eagles fell to 14-11 with the loss.
The Eagles return to action on Friday when they take on Coastal Carolina at 6 p.m. in the first game of a three-game Big South Conference series at Charles Watson Stadium in Conway, SC.
