Monty Sanders enters his third season as associate head coach at Winthrop in 2026-27. Recognized for his offensive expertise, recruiting ability and record of developing frontcourt players, Sanders serves as the Eagles' offensive coordinator while also handling general manager responsibilities and playing a leading role in player development.
During Sanders' five seasons as offensive coordinator on Mark Prosser's staffs at Western Carolina and Winthrop, their programs have produced some of the most prolific offensive seasons in school history. In Sanders' three seasons directing Winthrop's offense, the Eagles have posted a combined record of 69-31, gone 44-13 against Big South opponents and reached the conference championship game each year.
Since Sanders returned to Winthrop in 2024, the Eagles have recorded consecutive 23-win seasons and consecutive top-25 national finishes in scoring offense. Winthrop ranked seventh in Division I with a program-record 84.7 points per game in 2024-25 before finishing 24th nationally at 83.6 points per game in 2025-26. The two teams combined for 12 games of at least 100 points, tying the program's single-season record with six each year. Winthrop also ranked first nationally in free-throw rate in 2024-25 and 10th in 2025-26, according to KenPom.
Sanders has complemented that offensive production with an extensive record of developing frontcourt players. During his three seasons directing Winthrop's offense, D.J. Burns Jr., Kelton Talford and Logan Duncomb each earned First Team All-Big South recognition, with Burns and Duncomb being named Big South Player of the Year.
Sanders played a central role in Duncomb's emergence as one of the most improved players in college basketball. After averaging 3.0 points and 2.5 rebounds in a reserve role in 2024-25, Duncomb developed into the 2025-26 Big South Player of the Year, averaging 18.3 points and 8.9 rebounds while shooting 60 percent from the field. In conference play, he averaged 21.3 points and 10.3 rebounds, becoming only the second player in Winthrop history to average a double-double in league play. Duncomb was also named First Team All-Big South and NABC All-District and was selected as a finalist for the Lou Henson and Nolan Richardson awards.
In 2024-25, Sanders worked closely with Talford, who earned First Team All-Big South honors for the third consecutive season. Talford averaged 15.8 points and 7.9 rebounds while ranking sixth nationally in field-goal percentage. He completed his career third in Winthrop history in both scoring and rebounding.
Sanders' first stint at Winthrop came during the 2021-22 season, when the Eagles finished 23-9 and advanced to the Big South Championship game. Winthrop led the conference in field-goal percentage, averaged 8.6 three-pointers per game and ranked third in the league in scoring. Sanders also helped develop Burns into the 2021-22 Big South Player of the Year. Burns later earned all-conference recognition at NC State and helped lead the Wolfpack to the 2024 Final Four.
Between his two tenures at Winthrop, Sanders spent two seasons at Campbell, where he helped the Camels reach the 2023 Big South Championship game and assisted in the development of Big South Freshman of the Year Anthony Dell'Orso. He previously coached at UNC Wilmington and spent two seasons on Prosser's staff at Western Carolina, earning a promotion to associate head coach before the 2019-20 season.
As Western Carolina's offensive coordinator, Sanders helped produce the second-largest turnaround in Division I in 2019-20. The Catamounts improved by 12 victories and ranked 17th nationally in scoring offense, 14th in three-pointers per game and 17th in effective field-goal percentage. He also helped develop two-time All-Southern Conference selection and Lou Henson All-American Carlos Dotson.
Sanders began his collegiate coaching career at Elon, first as director of basketball operations and later as an assistant coach. Working primarily with the Phoenix post players, he helped develop career blocked-shots leader and 1,600-point scorer Lucas Troutman, along with three-time All-CAA and two-time NABC All-District selection Tyler Seibring. Sanders also helped Elon win the 2013 Southern Conference North Division title and earn its first Division I postseason appearance.
A proven recruiter, Sanders has signed players from across the United States and internationally, including prospects from Germany, Croatia, England, Australia, Egypt and Canada, among others. He was selected for the prestigious TopConnect Basketball Symposium in 2022 and 2023.
A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Sanders began his collegiate playing career at Richmond before transferring to Elon, where he was a two-year letterwinner and senior captain. He earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from Elon in 2009 and his MBA from Winthrop in 2023.
Sanders has a daughter, Emmerson Sloane, and a son, Beckham Steele.
