Chuck Rey

Coach Chuck Rey enters his fourth season as assistant coach at Winthrop University and continues to be one of the top offensive coordinators, middle hitter and setter coaches in the Big South Conference. 

According to Coach Torbett “Chuck is a strong statistical coach who utilizes concrete measures to provide feedback to the players.  He is a true student of the game and the art of coaching volleyball with access to some of the greatest coaches in the sport.  Winthrop Volleyball is fortunate to have him on staff.”
 
Under Coach Rey’s assistance, the 2011 Winthrop Volleyball team earned a Big South Conference Regular Season Championship. The team led the conference in team hitting percentage, middle hitter Becca Toor earned Big South Conference Player of the Year, a record setting seven Big South Player of the Week honors as well as led the Big South Conference in hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Stephanie Palmer was named to the First Team Big South Conference team, and freshman Jennica Mullins was 3rd overall in blocks in the conference.

Coach Rey came to Winthrop after spending a season as volunteer assistant coach at the University of Minnesota, one of the top programs in the country with 10 straight NCAA berths and the team was ranked as high as 6th in the nation. His responsibilities included offensive game-planning and working with the setters and defensive specialists.
Prior to his time at the University of Minnesota, Coach Rey started his college coaching career as assistant coach at Georgia Southern University.  He was also the Head Coach of the Georgia Southern Men’s Club Volleyball team that earned its first berth to the national championship tournament.

Coach Rey has also coached at Carolina Juniors Volleyball Club (Charlotte, NC), Low Country Volleyball Club (Bluffton, SC), Minnesota Select Volleyball Club (Minneapolis, MN), East Valley Juniors Volleyball Club (Chandler, AZ), Bluffton High School (Bluffton, SC) and Saguaro High School (Scottsdale, AZ). In addition, he has coached at numerous camps and with USA Volleyball High Performance.

He is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), Founder and Chairman of the AVCA First Time Attendees Committee, worked on the AVCA Assistant Coaches Committee as Big South Conference representative and USA Volleyball sub-committee representative.

Coach Rey also works on one of the world’s most popular volleyball coaching blogs: CoachRey.com and has developed two statistical categories (IPE – In Play Percentage – with Hall of Fame Coach, Mike Hebert, and Dig/Pass to Kill ratio) that are used in many top statistical analysis software programs.

Before coaching, Coach Rey spent 10 years as co-owner of an international marketing and logistics company that employed as many as 80 employees in 6 cities, including Chicago, Dallas, Nashville, Burlington, VT, Hilton Head Island, SC and Hong Kong.  During those business years, he found time to play USA Volleyball indoor and AVP Qualifier outdoor volleyball tournaments across the country. Coach Rey also played collegiate volleyball at Arizona State University and completed his Bachelor of Applied Science degree with a major in marketing at Roosevelt University in Chicago. He currently resides in Charlotte, NC, enjoys nutrition and exercise, and is active with Fellowship for Christian Athletes Coaches Bible Study.
