Christy Stegall was hired in August of 2014 as an assistant coach at Winthrop after being at Presbyterian College for the past two years.
Stegall served as PC's interim head coach for the final nine games of the 2012 season, leading the Blue Hose to a 5-4 record. PC advanced to the Big South Tournament semifinals in its first-ever appearance under her guidance. Over her two years at Presbyterian College, her responsibilities included recruiting and travel coordination, film exchange and scouting reports.
Prior to PC, Stegall came from a four-year stint as the top assistant coach with the Louisiana Tech volleyball team working under head coach Matt Sonnichsen. Her defensive knowledge of the game, attention to detail and incredible work ethic were essential to the on-and-off-the-court successes of the Lady Techster program.
While competing in the highly-competitive Western Athletic Conference which included national championship contender Hawaii and perennial NCAA Tournament power New Mexico State, Louisiana Tech had lost 60 of its last 64 league matches during the four seasons leading up to Stegall's arrival in Ruston. However, Sonnichsen and Stegall quickly turned the Lady Techsters into a competitor. In only their second year Louisiana Tech tied the program record for WAC wins in a season while also registering the most total victories (15) since 2003.
In addition to her on-the-floor role as assistant coach at Louisiana Tech, Stegall served as co-recruiting coordinator and team video coordinator while also being actively involved in the academic progress of the student-athletes. Through her efforts the program saw an improvement in its annual team grade point average (GPA), Academic Progress Rate (APR) and graduation success rate.
Following the departure of Sonnichsen after the completion of the 2011 season, Stegall was single-handedly in charge of all aspects of the program over the next four months, including scheduling, player development, off-season workouts and other administrative duties.
Stegall has worked various summer camps and coaching clinics throughout the country. She has been actively involved in satellite camps for eight years, working directly with Sonnichsen for six of those years. Stegall has worked camps in Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, South Carolina and Texas.
As a collegiate player, the Fort Mill, South Carolina native lettered at Newberry College from 2004 to 2007. A three-time letterwinner at the libero position for Newberry, she was instrumental in one of the biggest turnarounds in the history of the South Atlantic Conference during her senior season. After the Lady Indians finished 4-30 in 2006, the 2007 squad finished 19-9 overall and in fourth place in the conference as Stegall recorded 246 digs on the year. She finished her career at Newberry ranked ninth all-time with 779 career digs, including a season-high of 322 digs in 2005, which ranks 10th all-time in program history.
Stegall was also actively involved in extracurricular activities at Newberry as she was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta Fraternity, where she served as the Panhellenic President, and the Chi Beta Phi National Science and Math Fraternity. Stegall earned her bachelor's degree in biology as well as minors in art, math and Spanish from Newberry in the spring of 2008.
