Matthew Huddleston

Matthew Huddleston is in his third season as an assistant coach for the Winthrop basketball program.

Before joining Coach Kevin Cook’s staff, Huddleston spent 19 years working with the Georgia Metros Athletic Foundation, one of top AAU programs in the country. He was the Director of Coaching as well as a AAU head coach until arriving in Rock Hill.

"We are elated to have Matt on our staff at Winthrop," said Cook. "In one word, Matt is a Winner! When you spend some time with Matt you begin to feel as if you have known him your entire life. He made an immediate impact in the recruiting department as he has served as head coach for the highly successful Georgia Metros AAU program and has become very connected in the sport of women’s basketball during his 19 years with the Metros."

During his time with the Georgia Metros, Huddleston had the pleasure of coaching such star collegiate players as Maya Moore (Connecticut), Kelley Cain (Tennessee), Morgan Toles (Auburn/Florida State), Jordan Greenleaf (Auburn), Elan Brown (Vanderbilt), Kayla Lewis (Florida) and D’Andra Moss (Virginia Commonwealth). During his tenure Huddleston helped coach 25 AAU All-Americans, 12 NIKE All-Americans, four McDonald’s High School All-Americans, one NCAA National Player of the Year and over 100 players that earned scholarships in college.

As director of coaching, Huddleston was instrumental in the development of several programs that included leadership development, SAT preparation courses, skills camps and an NCAA recruiting course for parents and amateur athletes.

Huddleston, who earned a B.S. in Education from Valdosta State University, once owned and operated a company called Top Prospects Basketball in which he was responsible for the development of a skills training program for women and men pursuing basketball at the collegiate and professional level. He was also responsible for the organization and operation of events catering to the high school basketball community. One of the events he was responsible for organizing was Maya’s Merry Christmas Clinic (a Jordan brand event), for Maya Moore.
