Kevin Lynum, a native of Gainesville, FL is in his first season with the Eagles after being hired in June of 2017 as assistant women’s basketball coach.
Lynum comes to the Winthrop program after spending last season (2016-17) as the head women’s basketball coach and sports information director for Northwest Kansas Technical College. There he held a 28-2 (.933) overall record, which are the most wins in a single-season in the program’s history. He was nominated as a finalist for WBCA/Marine Corps Junior College National Coach of the Year Award and recruited and coached two WBCA Coaches All-Americans.
Prior to his stint at Northwest Kansas Technical College, Lynum was the top assistant women’s basketball coach and head JV coach for Southwestern College. He was the recruiting coordinator for the women’s basketball program and coached two Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference players. In 2015-16 the team had a winning conference record, clinched a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Playoff berth and advanced to the Final Four.
In 2011 he helped form the Florida Suns Youth Basketball Association Inc., where he held the position of head women’s basketball coach and athletic director. He helped develop the association into one of Florida’s most prestigious programs featuring top players in the nation, twelve teams statewide, and produced four student-athletes named to the Florida Academic Team.
From 2014-2015 Lynum served as head coach of the Fort Clarke School girl’s basketball team in Gainesville, FL. He guided the team to a division championship and the best record in school’s history. He also coached the league’s most valuable player and the district player of the year.
Lynum’s collegiate coaching experience began in 2013 at Warner University where he served as the top assistant coach for the women’s basketball program. He was also the recruiting coordinator and worked directly with two all-conference players and helped improve the program’s overall wins within the conference over the previous season.
Lynum began his coaching career at Overhills High School where he was the boy’s basketball head coach from 2010-2012. He contributed to the revamping of the program that led to a winning historic season earning a State Playoff berth and the first boy’s basketball college signees.
In 2005 Lynum joined the United States Army, where he served until 2013 (8 years). Lynum achieved the rank of staff sergeant and is the recipient of three Army commendation medals. In the Army Lynum worked as a Journalist, broadcast supervisor and in special operations. During his time in the service he graduated from the Defense Information School (Fort Mead, MD), receiving top honors. He also worked with the U.S. Army Soldier Show, which is a worldwide traveling entertainment stage show.
In 2012 Lynum graduated from the American Military University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration. He earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration in 2015 from Warner University and is currently pursuing his Doctorate in Education and Educational Leadership from Southwestern College.
In high school, Lynum was a five-sport athlete in basketball, baseball, football, track & field and wrestling. He helped lead the baseball team to two district championships. He was a four-year letterman in football where he played free safety. He was also two-year letterman in wrestling and track & field.
