Melissa is in her sixth season with the Lady Eagles and has recently been promoted to Assistant Head Coach. The Pickering, Ontario native came to Winthrop after a stand-out career for the University of Delaware, where she earned a Bacherlor of Science degree in Exercise Science with an emphasis in Exercise Physiology and a minor in Biology and was a member of the Dean’s List.
In her four years at Delaware she was named Second Team All-Colonial Athletic Association (2002 and 2003). Those same years she was co-captain. In 2003, she received the Univ. of Delaware Student Services for Athletes Outstanding Contributor Award. She was an outstanding defensive third baseman at Delaware with a quick glove and strong arm. In four seasons she committed just 18 errors.
She played in and started in over 175 games, which ranks among the top five all-time at Delaware. Basilio also finished among the all-time Top 10 leaders in at-bats and became the 17th player in school history to reach 100 hits or more in a career.
Basilio also spent a year as Vice President of the University of Delaware Student Athletic Advisory Council (2001-02) and a year as President on the Student Athlete Advisory Council (2002-03).
In the summer of 2009 she was named to the staff of the Senior Women’s Canadian National Team. The team had a busy summer competing at the Canada Cup in Surrey, BC, the U.S. World Cup in Oklahoma City, OK, and the Pan American Championships. The team finished with the silver at the Canada Cup, bronze at the U.S. World Cup and the silver at the Pan American Championship, which qualifies the team for the 2010 World Championship that will be be held in Oklahoma City, OK and the 2011 Pan American games in Mexico. Before arriving at Winthrop, Basilio was an assistant coach with the Markham Tigers in Markham, Ontario. She was also an assistant girls high school coach at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Pickering.
She is also an assistant coach for the Canadian Junior Women’s Softball National Team and participated in the Pan-Am Games in Puerto Rico in November 2006 and the Junior World Championship in Enschede, The Netherlands in June of 2007.
