Mike McGuire

Mike McGuire is in his 17th year of coaching at the collegiate level. He begins his twelfth year overall with the Winthrop baseball program as the Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator.

He is currently in his second coaching stint with the Eagles after serving as an assistant coach from 1997-2002.

McGuire serves as the program’s hitting coach, as well as coaching third base.

"I am very fortune to have Mike McGuire apart of my staff," said head coach Tom Riginos. "He has help me tremendously in the transition. Mike is a outstanding coach, recruiter and person. Mike is what Winthrop is all about."

Between periods on the Eagle staff, he was head coach of the Lander Bearcats in Greenwood, SC. At Lander, McGuire's teams averaged over 30 wins per season and each of his teams were ranked in the top 30 of Division II by Collegiate Baseball. His 2005 team was ranked as high as 7th in the country, establishing the highest ranking in school history. His 2004 squad tied a school record for wins in a season (33). McGuire also coached the first players in the program’s history to sign professional contracts.

In McGuire’s return to Winthrop in 2006, the Eagles had one of their best years in school history posting a 46-18 mark and finishing second as the NCAA Regional in Chapel Hill, NC. Winthrop set single-season team records for hits, home runs and total bases. The team batted .329, which was good enough to be ranked 7th in the country.

During his time as an Eagle, McGuire has coached the single-season and or career leader in almost every offensive category.

Prior to his arrival at Winthrop, he spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Morehead State University (1995-96), where he served as the Pitching Coach and Recruiting Coordinator.

During McGuire’s coaching career, he has seen over 35 of his players sign pro baseball contracts.

He played collegiate ball at the University of Akron before transferring to play two years at the University of South Carolina, where he participated in two NCAA Regional’s. Upon completing his eligibility at South Carolina, he played two years of professional baseball in the Frontier League for the Zanesville Greys. McGuire helped lead Zanesville to the first-ever Frontier League Championship in 1993. McGuire also hit the first home run in Frontier League history.

McGuire earned his bachelor’s degree in sports administration from South Carolina and a master’s degree in health, physical education and recreation from Morehead State.

He is married to the former Angela Kearns, and they are the parents of Courtney (6) and Sydney (4).
