RADFORD, Va. -- Winthrop lacrosse won its first Big South Conference matchup of the season, 15-10, at Radford on Wednesday afternoon.
FIRST PERIOD
- Radford earned the first draw control of the period by Aleese Warner
- A turnover by Kaitlyn Manderano allowed Evie Gee to score with an assist from Cassidy Deierlein, putting Radford on the board first
- Winthrop's first draw control of the game by Iris Leavitt led to a goal by Emily Hollinger, tying the game 1-1
- Hollinger then scored her second goal off a free position shot, giving the Eagles the 2-1 lead
- Turnovers were exchanged back and forth between the teams until the Highlanders tied the game with a goal by Ashlyn Bell, unassisted
- Another foul from Radford led to a successful free position shot from Ashlee Gensits, but was quickly met with a goal from Maddy Driscoll, making it a 3-3 game
- Man-up and man-down goals by Tori Iannotti and Manderano gave the Eagles a two-point lead, closing out the first period 5-3
SECOND PERIOD
- The Highlanders started the second period with two goals to tie up the game 5-5
- A turnover by Iris Leavitt gave Radford the opportunity to take the lead 6-5 with an unassisted goal from Gee
- Winthrop then received a foul, allowing Driscoll to score her third goal of the game and push the Highlanders' lead to 7-5
- A foul on Radford gave Hollinger her third goal of the game off a free position shot, cutting into the lead 7-6
- Radford's Mady Cheney turned over the ball, caused by Kamryn Davis, and with a successful clear attempt, Abby Hand tied the game with her first collegiate goal
- The game remained 7-7 going into the half
THIRD PERIOD
- Winthrop took the lead at the beginning of the third period after a turnover from Driscoll resulted in a successful clear attempt and goal by Mollie Calabrese
- The game was quickly tied back up with an unassisted goal by Hannah Hanger
- Turnovers by both teams left them without scoring a goal for five minutes until Radford scored two unanswered goals to regain the lead 10-8 at the 5:48 mark
- Iannotti then scored three goals back-to-back-to-back to give the Eagles an 11-10 lead going into the fourth
FOURTH PERIOD
- The Highlanders were unable to regain the lead in the fourth
- Katie Seiler found the back of the net first for the Eagles at the 8:53 mark
- Calabrese then got her second goal of the day after Gabby Pierpont got the draw control
- A green card on Radford gave the Eagles the man-up opportunity and increased their lead to 14-10 with a goal from Pierpont
- Another foul on Radford closed out the game 15-10 after a successful free position goal from Iannotti
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Emily Hollinger had a season-high four goals
- Tori Iannotti was one goal short of a second sock trick and led the team in goals (5)
- Iannotti also led the team in shots on goal
- Winthrop led in saves (10-8), draw controls (17-10), free position shots (9-4), and shots on goal (23-20)
- Abby Hand got her first collegiate goal
- Olivia Paton had a season-high four assists
- Winthrop outscored Radford in all but one period
