Baseball Sweeps Black Bears, Notches Seventh-Straight Victory

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The Winthrop University baseball team broke a 6-6 tie with three runs in the eighth inning and Ben Rehkow tossed 2.2 scoreless innings of relief as the Eagles held off a four-homer Maine attack for a 9-6 victory Sunday afternoon at Founders Field, extending its win streak to seven games.
GAME INFORMATION

RECORD: Winthrop (9-2) | Maine (2-10)
WINTHROP LEADERS: Josh Skowronski (2-for-4, double, HR, 2 RBI, walk), Jaylen Hernandez (1-for-3, HR, 3 RBI, walk), Corey Wouters (2-for-4, double, SB), Alan Benhardt (1-for-3, RBI, 2 walks)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gabe Natividad singled to right center to open the first and moved to second on a balk before Skowronski crushed a two-run homer to deep right to put Winthrop up 2-0
  • Wouters doubled down the left field line to start the second, moved to third on a Noah Cox sacrifice bunt and scored on a Natividad RBI groundout to make it 3-0
  • Maine answered with back-to-back solo homers from Rex Hauser and Juju Stevens in the third to cut it to 3-2
  • Winthrop responded immediately as Benhardt and Norton drew back-to-back walks before Hernandez blasted a three-run homer to deep right to push the lead to 6-2
  • Hauser pulled Maine right back with a three-run homer off Randy Guzman in the fourth to close it to 6-5
  • Stevens launched his second solo shot of the day, this one off Harrison Wilson in the fifth, to tie the game at 6-6
  • Wilson settled in after the homer, striking out three over two innings of relief before Rehkow entered in the seventh and kept Maine off the board the rest of the way
  • The game stayed knotted until the eighth when Grossington singled and Cox walked before a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position
  • Natividad lifted a sacrifice fly down the right field line to score Grossington and break the tie at 7-6
  • Another wild pitch allowed Cox to score before Skowronski ripped a double down the right field line and Benhardt singled home the insurance run to make it 9-6
  • Rehkow worked around a one-out single in the ninth, striking out Hauser looking to complete the series sweep

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Rehkow earned the win with 2.2 scoreless innings of one-hit relief, striking out two to slam the door after Maine's four-homer barrage
  • Hernandez homered for the third straight game, continuing to anchor the middle of the Winthrop lineup
  • Skowronski reached base three times and provided the early cushion with his two-run blast in the first
  • Maine launched four home runs, two each from Hauser and Stevens, but was held scoreless over the final four innings as Winthrop's bullpen shut the door
  • The Eagles completed the three-game sweep of Maine and have won seven straight after a 2-2 start to the season
