Perez Nets Hat Trick As Eagles Defeat PC

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop scored four second half goals highlighted by a hat trick from Jorge Perez to earn a 4-0 victory over Presbyterian College, Friday night in Big South Conference men's soccer action.

Game Recap
  • Eagles had a good scoring opportunity just 35 seconds into the match as Mathew Williams served a ball in front of goal as Juma Baden's header from straight on goal just missed wide of the right post
  • In the 17th minute Lucas Lindstrup collected a free ball in the box at angle to the keeper's left and fired a shot on frame that was turned away by Saed Anabtawi
  • In the 33rd minute Baden had another good chance getting on the end of a service in the box but his shot on frame was saved by Anabtawi as he closed in
  • Eagles created a few strong chances to score in the first 45 minutes but the game went to half scoreless
  • Winthrop finally broke through in the 49th minute as freshman Evan Tubiolo scored his first collegiate goal
  • Off a corner kick Sam Crolla put a shot on frame that was saved
  • Crolla tried to get the rebound as the ball bounced around and back out to Tubiolo who struck a shot into the upper portion of the goal past Anabtawi
  • Winthrop doubled its lead in the 63rd minute as Alfie Humphrey and Jorge Perez were free with numbers headed to goal and after a couple of passes Humphrey found Perez in front of goal as he placed a shot into the net
  • In the 73rd minute the Eagles had numbers again as Baden and Perez were free into open space
  • Baden played a pass in front to Perez who finished with a first touch shot
  • Perez completed his hat trick in the 76th minute as it was Baden again finding Perez in the box as he beat the keeper to the lower near corner from an angle for a 4-0 lead

Notables
  • Winthrop finished the game with an 18-5 advantage in total shots and 10-1 in shots on goal
  • The teams combined for 13 corners as the Eagles had nine and PC finished with four
  • Perez's hat trick is the first one by an Eagle since Jordan Walshaw at USC Upstate on Nov. 2, 2019
  • Perez is the first Eagle to score a hat trick in the second half alone of a contest since Max Hasenstab did so against Campbell in the 2015 Big South semifinal
  • Baden finished with two assists and has a point in 7-of-10 matches
