Porter Lifts Eagles Past UNC Asheville to Snap Skid

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- The Winthrop University women's basketball snapped a four-game losing streak behind a career-high-tying 25 points from Amourie Porter, holding off UNC Asheville, 59-55, Saturday afternoon at Kimmel Arena. 
FIRST QUARTER 
  • UNC Asheville struck first, attacking the paint early to grab the opening bucket. 
  • Winthrop settled in offensively through Cori Lard inside and Madison Ruff. 
  • Porter provided the first spark for the Eagles, scoring twice in the lane to push Winthrop in front midway through the quarter. 
  • Asheville answered with second-chance opportunities, using offensive rebounds to stay within reach. 
  • Mya Pierfax knocked down a late three to flip the lead back to Winthrop. 
  • Nia Green closed the quarter with a fast-break basket, sending the game into the second tied at 15. 
SECOND QUARTER 
  • Winthrop opened the quarter with momentum as Ruff finished inside and followed with a three to ignite a run. 
  • Porter took over defensively, turning steals into transition points as the Eagles began to pull away. 
  • UNC Asheville went scoreless for extended stretches as Winthrop's pressure disrupted offensive rhythm. 
  • Cori Lard buried a three to stretch the margin as the Eagles capitalized on turnovers. 
  • Pierfax finished a runout layup to cap a decisive stretch that swung the game. 
  • Porter scored in the final seconds to send Winthrop into halftime with a 34-23 advantage. 
  • Winthrop set the tone for a 19-8 second quarter. 
THIRD QUARTER 
  • UNC Asheville came out aggressive, moving the ball more effectively to create perimeter looks. 
  • Journee McDaniel connected from three early to spark the Bulldogs' response. 
  • Jamaria Freeman followed with a three as Asheville continued to chip away. 
  • Winthrop answered by attacking the paint, leaning on Porter and Tocarra Johnson to steady the offense. 
  • Aileen Marquez added a three to keep Asheville within striking distance. 
  • The Bulldogs closed the quarter strong, trimming the deficit to 46-41. 
FOURTH QUARTER 
  • Porter opened the period with a steal and finish, pushing the lead back to two possessions. 
  • Asheville continued to pressure, with D'Yanna Maxey and Green converting key baskets to close the gap. 
  • Winthrop responded with timely plays, including a jumper from Porter and a fast-break finish by Pierfax. 
  • The game tightened late as both teams traded turnovers and trips to the free-throw line. 
  • Marquez hit a late three to cut it to three in the final seconds. 
  • Jada Ryce sealed the win at the line as Winthrop closed out the 59-55 decision. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • Winthrop: Amourie Porter finished with 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting, adding seven rebounds, four steals, three assists and two blocks. Madison Ruff added 10 points, six rebounds and three assists, while Mya Pierfax chipped in eight points and eight boards. 
  • UNC Asheville: Nia Green led the Bulldogs with 19 points, while Journee McDaniel totaled 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists. 
  • Winthrop shot 41 percent from the floor and forced 24 turnovers, converting them into 19 points. 
  • UNC Asheville finished at 38 percent shooting, hitting five threes, and scored 25 bench points. 
  • The Eagles held a 38-36 edge on the glass and outscored Asheville 19-11 in fast-break points.
