Macon, Ga. – For a second straight contest the Winthrop women's soccer team battled one of the top team's in the Southern Conference as it fell 4-2, Thursday evening at Betts Stadium.

Game Recap
- Mercer struck early with goal in the 3rd minute as Sydney Farr placed a shot into the bottom right corner
- Eagles tried to answer right back in the 4th minute but Lauren Kelly's shot was off the mark
- Ally Bender tested the keeper in the 14th minute as he shot was on frame to the left corner but Avery Parker was there for save
- Mercer doubled its lead in the 29th minute as Payton Nutzman's shot found the lower right corner of the goal
- In the 32nd minute Sophia Balliet looked to get Winthrop on the board but her shot to the lower right corner was saved by Parker
- Balliet had a couple more looks before the half but both of her shots were off the mark
- Eagles came out of the break seeking a goal early as Mia Silber fired a shot less than a minute in but was saved by Parker
- Winthrop broke through in the 60th minute as Cordelia McIntosh set up Linsday Sheets who struck a shot into the lower left corner
- Mercer regained a two goal lead in the 62nd minute as a Morganne Eikelbarner scored off a pass from Nutzman
- The Bears added another in the 74th minute as Farr took a pass from Kelsie Henton and placed a shot into the right side of the goal
- Eagles scored again in the 87th minute as Megan McGovern found the back of the net
Notables
- The goals for Sheets and McGovern were the first of their collegiate careers
- Mercer finished with a 25-12 advantage in shots and 11-7 in shots on goal
- Eagles earned five corners while Mercer had three
Looking Ahead
Winthrop returns home on Sunday, Sept. 14 for its final non-conference match of the regular season as it takes on Queens at 2 p.m.
