Rock Hill, S.C. – Ronaltha Marc's free throw with a minute left broke a 47-47 tie, lifting the Eagles to an eventual 54-47 victory over Charleston Southern at home Wednesday night.

How it Happened
First Quarter | Winthrop took a 6-2 lead at the 7:01 mark and then scored three more times down low to extend their lead to 12-4 four minutes later. The Eagle defense also held the Buccaneers to one basket for four minutes after the Eagles took the initial 6-2 lead. Charleston Southern then responded with nine straight points to lead it by one inside of a minute. The Buccaneers would lead 13-12 at the end of one.

Konnor Gambrell's layup put Winthrop back in front to start the second quarter and at the 7:24 mark,
Ronaltha Marc's basket extended the lead to three for the home team, forcing Charleston Southern to call a timeout. For the next three minutes, each team would make a free throw, leaving Winthrop still ahead 17-14. Then Marc's layup at the 4:16 mark put the Eagles ahead by five. The Buccaneers answered with eight straight points to end the half and lead 22-19.
Third Quarter | Winthrop scored eight of the first ten points of the second half to go ahead 27-24 at the 6:59 mark on
Mya Pierfax's jumper. Charleston Southern tied it up with a three-pointer seconds later only to have Marc's jumper put Winthrop back in the lead, 29-27 immediately thereafter. Then nearly five minutes later the Eagles went up by seven on
Ciara Harris's second-chance layup. This made the score 38-31 at the 1:27 minute mark. Charleston Southern ended the stanza by scoring the final three points and the Eagles took a four-point lead heading into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter |
Blessing Okoh scored and was fouled at the 8:39 mark. The ensuing free throw put the Eagles up seven. Nearly two minutes later Gambrell's basket extended the margin to nine. Winthrop then went scoreless for three minutes while holding the Buccaneers to one basket during the same time frame. Charleston Southern responded with three straight shots from deep on three straight possessions and a score in the paint to tie the game at 47 with 1:18 left. But the Buccaneers fouled Marc with 1:07 mark and her free throw gave Winthrop the lead for good, 48-47. After a stop, Winthrop would hit six free throws down the stretch, providing the Eagles the final margin of victory.
