How it Happened
First Quarter | Winthrop's only lead of the game was 3-2 after a triple by
Mya Pierfax at the 8:43 mark. The Lancers responded with a 7-0 run to go up 9-3 nearly three minutes later. Baskets down low by
Ronaltha Marc,
Amourie Porter and
Nuria Cunill quickly cut the margin to two at 11-9 with 2:16 left. But Longwood closed the quarter by scoring five straight points to take a 16-9 lead.
Second Quarter | Winthrop battled back in the second quarter, cutting the lead to one on four occasions. The last would occur at 28-27 with 1:24 remaining. Five different Eagles would score in the quarter. After Longwood opened the frame with a basket, the Eagles went on an 18-10 run to make it a one-point game with nearly a minute left. Longwood would then hit a free throw to end the quarter and take a 29-27 edge going into the locker room.
Third Quarter | Two free throws by
Konnor Gambrell tied the score at 29-29 at the 9:12 mark. But that would be the last tie of the game. Longwood would conclude the final nine minutes of the quarter on a 14-7 run to lead 43-36 going into the fourth quarter as their defense held the Eagles to two field goals in the stanza.
Fourth Quarter | The visitors came out and scored the first five points and seized their largest lead of the night at 48-36 at the 8:12 mark. Now in a desperation situation, Winthrop attempted a last-ditch rally, scoring eight of the next 10 points to cut it six at 50-44 with nearly four minutes left but four straight points by the Lancers took it back to 10 at the 2:36 mark. The Eagles then closed the game strong, scoring 13 of the final 18 points to account for the final margin.
